Alternative's for pf substrate sterilization?
    #313217 - 05/09/01 02:50 PM (23 years, 7 months ago)

I tried the way with the boiling water in the pots, but i think too much water got in some of the jars.. not sure yet but i am gonna leave them and see what happens.. is there anyway to use maybe the microwave or anything else besides a pressure cooker which i might be forced to go buy soon.. ?

I only fill the pot half way up the jars. And I make sure the jar lids are barely loose with tinfoil on top. You also have to make sure the pot is just lightly boiling ( on simmer or low). I usually have a 100% success rate with no contams. I don't have a pressure cooker either, but I'll end up with one eventually. If you use anything other than brown rice flour you'll need a pressure cooker. I haven't tried the microwave. It seems some have failed using the microwave and some have succeeded.

It doesn't matter. If I use lids with holes there is a piece of masking tape covering the holes and connecting to the ring. I have used lids with no holes or tape, just tinfoil. It all worked fine. I would just remove the lid, shoot four different spots and place the lid back on. The dry vermiculite barrier was sufficient
