Hi all I had my first G. Spectabilis roundup of the season... I found 3 new spots, and the 3 spots from last year havn't produced any fruits as of yet... These specimens are a little beat up, "should have been picked a few days ago". But oh well.. I saw some nice pins on the way for next week.. All of these were found on the side of the road.. Some in yards under maple and oak, fruiting from buried roots. others at the base of a stump, in a small ditch...Hopefully my other spots will be producing soon and I can get some better pictures... oh well that's it for now... Nofindum....
They are out and about in the northeast so If you seek them keep your eyes opened... I think I'll make some tea!!!!! Nofindum......

Awesome finds, nice to see someone is finding Gyms in the northeast...
-------------------- Dreaming of that face again. It's bright and blue and shimmering. Grinning wide And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes. On my back and tumbling Down that hole and back again Rising up And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

I live in the northeast as well (PA) and I find these mushrooms that almost are identical to the gyms on this page however they're really small not even the size of your matchbook in the picture, are they related somehow?

there are several species of gymnopilus... GGreatone, has done extensive research on them.. He would be the one to ask... I know of gymnopilus penetrans... They are very similar.. they are called the little gym... I've found several of them earlier in the season.. but never collected specimens.... Here in RI I've collected and bioassayed. 2 seperate species of Gymnopilus.. here is a link to the as of yet unknown species I found last year... I just went by the spot today and there are about 50 pins poking up in a cluster.. so in a few days I will have pictures of them as well... If they don't get run over.. "they are ex- tremely close to the road.... Thank you, all for the interest.. Nofindum.... .....gymnoIdon't know...

I found these in similar habitat that you found your Gyms, growing on a somewhat buried willow tree root, in a giant cluster. They overlapped one another heavily. And there were tons of them. I have been notified that they could possibly be Jack-o-lanterns, but no one has seemed to make a final conclusion. They are similar looking to your Gyms, but the confusion lies in the discoloration on two of the particular clusters. They are browning in the center, either due to age, or sun exposure.

You should start a new thread and post a proper ID request.
Your mushrooms kinda look like gyms but I know nothing.

Are those a active gym nofind_um posted?
-------------------- "Would you tell me please which way I ought to walk from here?" "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to." said the Cat. "I don't much care where-" said Alice. "Then it doesn't matter which way to walk." said the Cat.
