Casing; pinning temps?
    #3130611 - 09/13/04 05:09 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Despite all the posts, TEKs, and FAQs, I cannot seem to find a source that says what temp I want for ideal pinning. Right now my poor man's pod is a whopping 58F, which I'm guessing is WAY too low.

This kind of leads into my next question: I know that I can heat up a PMP with an aquarium heater, but has anyone tried a heating blanket underneath the pod instead? Those are cheaper, and would be easier to control externally.

Dont ever use a heating blanket. I just did the same mistake of using one of those about three weeks ago. It literally melted the myco away. There is no way to accuratlly control the temp on those things. The best thing to do is find some money and get a submersible fish heater.

Well, I've got a heating belt I use for wine making underneath the pod right now. It heats up to room temp (21 C) and that's as high as it goes. Works real well for a 6 Gallon batch of wine...hopefully it will get my temps up until I can get back to the pet store to pick up a tank heater.

70-72F is what you want for pinning. After pinning you can bump the temp up a little (maybe 75F) to get faster growth.

I always use a heating blanket under my terr. It keeps the temp constant, and the humidity high enough. My myco is doing perfect.

I use a heating pad, and set at low with my household temps, it works out great for my incubator. My household temps should be good for my fruiting, though. I guess it's the same principal... on the LOW setting, I get a 8-14 degree boost at all times.

Hope this helps, but I doubt it did.
