dung/straw try failed - Golden Teachers

My last container just went down to green mold. I spent too much time on these shroomies for this to happen (Arrrrrggghhh!!!) I used composted cow manure/straw 1:4, pasturized at 165-175 degrees for a full 1.5 hours. I put this 4" thick in 17x11" rubbermaids with lids, along with a quart of colonized bird seed. This was my first try with dung/straw or either alone. The colonization caught on quick, the casing looked like cobweb mold at first, but I waited this out suspecting it was mycelium, which it was. 10 days later the mycelium isn't moving very fast, and 2weeks, of course the green mold moves in. One casing at a time, I've been dumping them outside to try and salvage a few shrooms out of the deal. Here is what went wrong: 1 Too much manure, made the substrate way overly nutritious 2 Didn't add lime 3 Didn't chop straw enough 4 packed substrate too tight 5 didn't use enough birdseed to spawn I hope my experience will help some people get past the bulk substrate learning curve. I will go ahead with a straw only substrate soon. from what I understand, straw alone is good enough for cubies, and doesn't require as much innoculant to spawn quickly.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it is helpful that you have posted this info... Were your casings wall to wall in a rubbermaid or were they in trays... wall to wall i assume... How did you go about humidifying.. or did the whole casing (considering the size) humidfy itself.. I plan on using this method soon and am just looking for any helpful hints... Worm Castings also look like a good option for a substrate to colonize with grain.. Peace... Saucony Fever
