Convicted Felons Owning Firearms
    #3127614 - 09/13/04 12:36 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I was noting in another thread that convicted felons aren't allowed to own firearms. On the surface it sounds like a good idea, but I have a few concerns about it.

If someone has truely "paid their debt" to society and served the sentance that a judge/jury handed down, why are they prohibited from owning a gun? If they truly are still a threat to society, they shouldn't be released from prison. I don't see why we keep punishing someone after they've "done the time".

After you "paid your debt" there is a chance you can have your rights re-instated....

I understand what your saying, and completely agree

I think that violent felons should not be allowed to own firearms, but nonviolent felons (especailly ones who commit victimless crime) should be allowed to own them.

I'm more concerned about the government taking away their right to vote.

Every convicted person in or out of jail should be allowed to vote.

I tend to agree.

I totally agree...but i tend to think that those who have committed crimes using guns didnt obtain the guns legally in the first place and that they have the means neccesary to buy and possess them illegally very easily....like after their time in prison is up :frown:

right... but if a known violent felon caught in possession of a gun,
they're put in jail longer than joe off the street caught with a gun he
doesn't have a license for.

so they can't go to a gunstore and buy a gun and if they're caught with
an illegal gun (they cant be up to much good, i'd wager. sucks if they're
really trying to protect themselves, though), they're also charged with
possession as a convicted felon.

afoaf was a convicted felon and got put in jail for 7 years because
his dumb bitch ex left a handgun in his car and a cop found it during
a 'routine traffic search.' fucking cops.

If this person hasn't been rehabilitated to a degree where the parole board can say that he is "very unlikely" to commit more violent crimes, he souldn't be released.
