    #3127103 - 09/12/04 08:20 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I saw on the news yesterday in a couple days that weapons like M-16s or whatever the fuck they are and assault rifles and shit will be legal in america. you could go to the store and buy one......

when that happens the NRA will be supporting bush too.

Fully automatic weapons will remain illegial to own. There will be no real change as the weapons were never actually banned (not that they should have been. I own several) thanks to a grandfather clause. Plus these guns are involved in so few crimes that it doesn't make sense to even attack them except for the fact that they look dangerous.

And by the way the NRA already supports Bush.

the M-16, being an automatic weapon, was illegal before the 1994 ban and will remain illegal after it dies.

the 1994 assault weapons ban does not ban machine guns. machine guns have been illegal since the '30's. it bans semi-automatic weapons with menacing-looking cosmetic features.

"The semi-automatic weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons ? anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun ? can only increase that chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."

- Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center

that's what you get for watching the liberal media.

Convicted felons can't own hand guns. I wonder if they would be allowed to own assault weapons. More benefits for the neocons.

Rifles don't need to be registered in most states.

No gun needs to be registered in Georgia (actually there is a law forbiding gov't from keeping records), but it is still illegial for a felon to own a gun.

Most states have a brief background check when purchasing a firearm. Convicted felons can't own a firearm, vote, or PURCHASE property.

The entire ban was a piece of catshit and was worthless to begin with. I'm glad it's taking a long walk off a short dock.

All it banned was things that made guns more deadly, like OHNO a pistol-grip stock, a bayonet lug, a muzzle brake (flash suppressor.. yeah just watch how much flash they actually suppress).

Things like that. It was a piece of feel-good legislation pushed on the ignorance of many. Not exactly ignorance, but lies.

Essentially anybody that you saw on television talking about what the bill would do? THEY WERE LYING TO YOU. Feinstein I recall made mentions of these awful guns that just when bang-bang-bang-bang so long as you held the trigger down, and that this would take care of them.

Bullshit.

Many others said the same garbage on the news, while the interviewer just nodded and said "Ohhhhh..". None of them had a fucking clue about firearms at all -- let alone a dictionary to look up what "semi-automatic" and "fully automatic" mean, and what the difference is. Let alone any understanding of current gun laws.

The law's toast. Good. It never meant a damned thing in the first place. The anti-gun lobby is teeming with idiots and liars.

uh, you can buy assault rifles as easy as any other gun. i shot an ak 47
earlier today, infact.

its a semi automatic, but any semi auto can be make fully auto simply
by filing down a rod that protrudes into part of the chamber. i dont know the mechanics of it, but its supposedly quite easy.

you can also get permits to own automatic rifles in many states, i'm
pretty sure.

mushmonkey was dead on the money. our media is full of spineless
hacks who are the pets of the corporate owned/government subservient
propoganda machine.

That's exactly why the law is so idiotic. It allows all of the old
guns with all of the old characteristics to remain legal and in
circulation. And, it makes it so that guns manufactured from
1994 to 2004 aren't allowed to have certain non-lethal cosmetic
characteristics, but the guns themselves were still manufactured,
sold, and legal. How fucking dumb is that? It is a useless and
pointless law that is a symbolic and worthless attempt by the anti-
gun lobby to "do something".

I saw an opinion editorial in USA-Today the other day where the
person(who obviously had no clue about guns) railed against
the expiration of the law. They were yelling about how having
collapsible stocks, bayonet lugs, and grenade launchers on newly
manufactured guns would turn our streets into killing zones. When
was the last time someone was killed with a bayonet on a gun in this
country? When was the last time someone actually got ahold of a
grenade(which are illegal) and used it with a grenade launcher to
kill someone? And, if criminals want an assault rifle with a
collapsible stock, they will just modify the gun themselves(because
they don't give a fuck about laws as it is) or just buy one of
the old pre-ban guns.
