Mycosupply Innoculation Guns
    #3127280 - 09/12/04 11:05 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I was wondering if anyones used this or anything like this before? I plan on doing lots of knocking up and this seems like a choice to consider. 50 syringes for 50 bucks or this for 70 bucks and can be used over and over again. Has anyone used them before? How easily are they sterilized? Does just the tube or the gun get sterilized too? PC them? Also I'm worried about how to attach my liquid to the tube, what sort of containers to use. Could I just use pints with a hole and shove the tube down? Doesnt seem to sterile. I'd be using it for liquid cultures and spores and points.

Heres the link:

Ive looked at that item too. I decided i never make that many jars from syringe to make it worth it. I only make a few jars pick the best then G2G. That method its far better then even liquid cultures.

But on to your q's,
Im sure you can PC it. Wrap it in foil while sterilizing. Insert the tube into a large polyfill wad at the top. You might want to cut or shave the end at an angle like a syringe so it goes into the polyfill easier.

go to a farm store; syringes and needles average about $.26 ea.
sometimes it can be hard to find the 1&1/2 in. needles ,but if you talk to the folks running the place they will order whatever you need...farmers are very helpfull people

LOL if you werent going to buy it then why did you make this post?

You can re-steralize syringes many times, just buy the good ones. Ive re-steralized mine as many as 10 times. Any more then around 10 and the rubber starts to get real dry but they still work.

I didn't see the 50 for 50 on mycosupply. Is that from one of the other sponsors?

Yes be careful with farm stores, they rarely know what they are talking about when you talk needle size. Twice I walked away with needles I thought were long and turned out to be too small, thus when I pulled in the water there was so much pressure I had to sit there for a few minutes holding the syringe firmly whilst it sucked in as much as it could.

Thats why you should always inspect your merchandise before going home. And most needles you buy either attached to the syringe or self contained, have the gauge written on the side. In fact i dont think ive ever seen one with out the gauge size on it.

Aren't syringe gauges color coded?

Some appear to be, such as the chart on this manufacturers page.

I don't know if they all are or if it's a standard.

In medicine its pretty standard.
Gray is 16 ga
Green is 18 ga
Pink is 20 ga
Blue is 22 ga
red is 25 ga
and yadda yadda yadda.

I have not seen them vary from company to company either.

I got this at the local feed store for $0.60. Holds 70cc and I can do 70 jars at once

Wow, i guess if youwant something bad enough you'll pay for it. But in my opinion a syringe does the job just as well.

it should be plainly marked on the box.... 19 guage 11/2"... every box of teurmero and B&D I have ever used is marked that way.... the size of the box is also a big indicator...

I looked at the link and that gun looks kinda chintzy and expensive.

Here is a link to something that is both cheaper and a lot better looking. I?ve used a similar all-metal design gun and they work pretty well.

it's only a little cheaper and actualy serves a different purpose
it also doesnt have the flexability that the MycoSupply gun has
I use that very same stule for vaccinating the horses, mine has
a borosilicate syringe that is inserted

Who said I wasnt going to buy it? I plan on it if it is worth it..however that other gun seems interesting..what I'm still worried about and no one addressed is how to sterily the cord can be put into the liquid culture. Using the pistol grip one it seems it fills up and I could possibly just sterilize the whole gun.

To all those posting about syringes I will order some in the mean time however doing liquid cultures and about 50 jars at a time every week or so I'd like to pick up something to make the process go quicker. I'm not so worried about the extra cash if it saves me time.

its well worth it if you are doing lots of work with cultures, as for sterility, it would be best to consult with MycoSupply
