Puget Sound Chantrelles
    #3126654 - 09/12/04 07:54 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

A great day in the woods!  I went into the Cascade Mountains with a friend today.  First we saw these really cool puffballs growing on mossy logs:

These looked really cool, but whatever setting my camera was on makes it look like it's night out.

Then we started seeing some blobs of cheese. . .woohoo!

I'm going to saute these in a minimum of butter and freeze in portions [whatever survives my dinner plate tonight, that is  ]

We left a lot of small ones;  it's very early in what looks to be a bomber season.

I'd guess maybe 2000-2500 ft? The pass is about 3000 ft and we were west a ways. If you guys are heading to the penninsula, near Forks/Rialto Beach has always treated me well.

Good luck!

Those are picture perfect chanterelles! The ones I find usually have slug slime on them and larvae in them. Doesn't stop me though.

I have been finding them by the bunches in SW WA in the Willipa Bay area at just about sea level. interesting how the micro climates work.

From the same general area as before:  Seems like the more moss the better!

These got really beat up during the hike.  It started downpouring mid-way, and I stupidly was using a double-paper grocery bag.  Ended up carrying them in my shirt :frown:

As I've already said in a few other posts, I found some white Chantrelles out in Bellevue the other day. Also oysters and Clitocybe gigantea.

For the first time, I also found puffballs growing on the base of a mossy tree.
