A couple questions

Alright everyone,
I have been waiting for DD to come back on but I just can't wait any longer. My monkey has been brewing up a fine experiment from the looks of things so far. He has 24 PF tek BRF 1/2 pint jars (12 PESH/12 B+). 7 of the PESH were fully colonized and all crumbled in seperate ziplock bags. About 3 of the B+ are coming up on full colonization. All the rest are growing stedily now.
He has ordered a couple of Gro-Bricks (Very cheap he may add, only a buck apiece). He plans on casing most of the jars with the gro-bricks. From what he has heard, he should place 1 brick and 5 quarts of water into a bag and let sit for 20 min.
-Does this need to be sterlized from here?
The Gro-Bricks don't arrive for another 2-3 days and he broke up the cakes yesterday.
-Will they be ok if left in the bags and kept in the dark?
He then plans to lay each cake in a ziplock disposible container, the ones about 4"/4"/4". With an inch of the gro-brick on top of that.
-Should he go with perlite or hand mist?
He also wants to break up some cakes into worm castings. he lost all the information he had on worm castings when DD went down. Anyone out there know the ratio for 1 BRF cake to how many cups of worm castings. I think it was around 5. And also if anyone knows the microwave tek for the worm castings too.
My monkey also had a couple of ideas.
-Any attempts with casing with mowed grass, or leftover wheatgrass pulp?
-Would it be possible to innoculate straight bread?
Just some thoughts, they probibly sound stupid but he was just thinking about them

Well, here are some suggestions for your many questions... Don't sterilize casing--actually, it theoretically opens up space for more contaminants to thrive. pasteurize--from 160-180 degrees. you can even do this in a microwave if you have a meat thermometer which is microwavable...
the cakes are fine in the bag in the dark.
my friend has had difficulty with perlite--if humidity gets too high, it is quite difficult to bring it down. you could always line the bottom with it, and add water (and some H2O2) later if needed.
don't obsess too much about the ratio--use a reasonable amount of cakes anywhere from 10 to 50 percent, i suppose. the more you use, the faster the colonization. the less you use, the longer it will take. it will still colonize however--just never know if a contam or two will sneak in there...
good luck to your monkey!

I have never inoculated bread but I see no reason why it would not work as long as it is well sterilized and not too moist.
Grass clippings can be used for casing material and, I am sure, wheat grass pulp but they must be old, weathered, and yellow. Fresh green material rots.
