electronic music...my newest obsession
    #3124515 - 09/12/04 12:13 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

2 raves and im hooked....i never really gave this type of music the time of day, but now my collection of rock has taken a back seat to my newest obsession. i found this...Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music http://www.di.fm/edmguide/# and have been looking through it for about 45 min now....i love how it gives samples of all the sub-genres, along with a brief comentary on its history and influences, in a spiderweb-over-time-layout...heh, anyway, just thought id throw it up if anyone else might be interested in checking it out...

"Happy Hardcore is like the spoiled little sibling of the Hardcore family, who got all the breaks, all the looks, all the money, all the chicks and all the successes of life without having to work for it. Just about despised by every other genre, Happy Hardcore is the most popular Hardcore music of all, with its signature chipmunk vocals and silly sing-a-long anthems and shameless hug-a-thon optimism that pisses everybody off to no end. This is the core realm of the candy ravers. Some of the stuff feels so godawfully childish that I feel like a pedophile just listening to it, but its not all bad. Truth be known: ALL the world's Happy Hardcore is made by only 12 guys, who have more pseudonyms than a shark has teeth, and who churn it out at such a feverish pace you'd almost think that there's probably a program that makes it for them. Just randomize the key values, get Sugar from YTV to sing the lyrics, and away you go."

LOL

just avoid the commerical shit - the crap you can purchase on BestBuy...it generally sucks.
...look for vinyl...or cd imports...or underground artists.

oh yeah, trance is for pussies on too many drugs
who dont know any better..or for hippies that dont know electronic music.

bi0 record recommendation of the day: Anthony Rother: Hacker : Psi49net Records, Germany 2002. find that asap.

i really dont know that many electronic artists, but the few stuff i do have i love!  i listened to alot of infected mushroom in the past but now i'm definitely enjoying the more mellow stuff and am listening to shpongle quite a bit.

if anyone can recommend some good ambient artists, maybe like shpongle but it doesnt have to be, that would be awesome!

I have been listening to electronic music constantly since about 1993 and own several hundred vinyl records as well as about a thousand cds and about 40GB of mp3/ogg, and I'll be the first to admit that 99% of electronic music blows. All the generic boomboomboom crap like trance and generic house and all the music that's in commericals (or could very well be in a commerical), fuck that. but the remaining 1% is incredible, beautiful, fucked-up music. But I guess that is the nature of pop music - I'd say that 99% of rockbased music sucks as well.

I'm a fan of the exception - not the mainstream.

If the music is not inspired by or have direct roots in Stockhausen or John Cage or Steve Reich, then I am not interested. I need brains and theory behind the sounds, otherwise it's just more generic crap to me. I guess im not interested in dance music anymore - give me some head music.

is this elitism? eh, I dont know or care. I've been around the scene for a long time and have high standards, I guess.

Well, if you really think about it , a rock band is nothing more than a synthesizer. For example, 4 different guys (vocals, guitar, bass, drams) combine their sounds to form a complex production. Plus, and electric guitar is about as "electronic" as you're going to get, same with a microphone. Then you have to get a PA system and all the little auxiliary pieces of equipment to play live or record or whatever, not mention a studio, and whatever medium you're going to record on.

I do enjoy rock, but a rock'n'roll band is quite limited compared to a "synthesizer" (i'm going to lump all electronic music under synthesized music... because i'm lazy), which can produce shit that you've never heard before. I guess the only thing that is *really* different about rock is the vocals.

Electronic music/hip hop/rock/whatever can potentially be bland and predictable, that's why i don't dig trance/house...

I dont think comparing a group of independant minds and masters of individual instruments to a synthesizer shows much except that you dont know about the spirit behind music. And a electric guitar, still has physically vibrating strings, the vibration is only amplified differently... when you have a physical object to manipulate the sound can be manipulated to control the emotion and spirit of the note. If you dig synths just because they make different sounds, you should try banging a stick on things. or something.
On the other hand, there is some electronic that I've heard while tripping and enjoyed. I was just making an offhand comment earlier, but yeah.. a rock band is in no way comparable to a synthesizer.

Here are some albums you shouldn't be caught without if you're getting into electronica:

Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
Prodigy - Fat of the land
Prodigy - Music of the Jilted Generation
Fatboy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry
Fatboy Slim - You've Come a Long Way Baby
Orbital - Brown (it doesn't have a name but the album is brown)
Daft Punk - Homework
Crystal Method - Vegas

These are some of the basics, if you like them pm me and I can give you some more beats for your brain. I'd say I've listened to each of these albums around 100-200 times already and I can still listen to them. That good.

who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter, bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

I've been around the scene for a long time and have high standards, I guess.

how very self-limiting.

not being interested in what I consider "generic music" is self-limiting? I've heard all of it - in fact, I was probably going to parties when most of ya'll were in elementary school. I'm hardly being closedminded and self-limiting. I just think trance and other boring beats are overated & mediocre & more fitting for car commericals.

Ishkur's Guide is the bomb! I love browsing through it, listening to the samples. But if this is your first exposure to electronic music, let me point out one major flaw in the guide. While most of these genres were invented and flourished in Europe, Ishkur makes it sound like electronic music is a US phenomenon, while in reality the US electronic music scene is almost non existant. The few groups and projects that do exist are bleak copies of copies, but there are some guys like Cex, Nautilis and Venetian Snares that's beginning to make the US scene viable.

Dig it, psytrance is where it's AT - Infected Mushroom and Hallucinogen are key. Fuck cheese trance/most other kinds of trance - that stuff IS wack. But some good PSY or PSY/Dub/ambient like

Shpongle, Doof, Youth, Ott.

Definately as complex/musical/emotional as any good rock music. Repitition is key in both types of music and is not a bad thing.
Variation on themes yo!

Don't forget how much truly cheesy and repetitive (in the bad way) rock there is. Just as bad as cheese trance man. Good music is good music no matter how it's made.

probably because he likes that music and can recognize the intricacies that differ between artists of the genre, and claiming that a type of music is "generic" and "formulated" is pretty insulting.. I dont have the same taste in music as 40, but i dont try to tell him that what he listens to is crap. In all seriousness, its awesome your broadening your musical horizens Wrestler, only good things can come of it.

geez, this is like telling a bunch of Britney Spears fans that pop music blows. I guess I should hold back next time - ya'll are a sensitive lot.

wrestler asked for suggestions, and I offered my suggestions of what I think is good and what is not good in electronic music (as a long-time fan I think I am qualified to give such recommendations).

Have you never put out criticism of a type of music, type of food, type of car, type of clothing, type of drug, type of movie, type of car, type of computer, type of politic, type of sport, etc.? Of course you have - we all have. So, why cant I offer my opinion on trance without people being crybabies? If there is disagreement, lets actually discuss why.

I can recogize the intricacies of the trance genre just fine, and I can also recognize why trance/progressive house is often regarded as the "pop" of electronic music.

thank you for your suggestions....

people have different tastes...what kind of response would you expect when telling a bunch of britney spears fans that pop music blows? they are fans of that music you think blows, so yea, they might get a little defensive/offended by your statement...i dont think anyone is crying about your opinion, rather the way you throw it out there. you dont like trance, thats fine...no need to bash it though....

I fail to see how having higher standards for music equates to being jaded. Explain yourself.

so, not being interested in a particular subgenre of music is self-limiting, even if I am quite familiar with it and have been since the evolution of trance from the German techno scene?

I'm sure you're not into scat (I think), does that mean you're limiting yourself? um, no. Just means you know what you like and dont like.

sorry, I am not jaded - you seemed to have left out a large portion of what I said - I explained that I am interested in music that is more complex and less mainstream than trance. This is being in tune with one's taste, not being jaded. Yes, I have been around awhile and I have learned what is good and what is disposable after time. And once again, I'm interested in shifting the discussion from me to why I think trance is is the pop of electronic music - but something tells me you're more interested in flaming and smileys than an actual discussion about music. If so, peace the fuck out man.

i'd rather partake in enjoying music for what
I may concieve it to be, and form my own opinions,
lest they not be as biased, jaded & tainted as yours.
so rather than "discuss" about what is better than who
is better than what,
ill just leave it at that,

& add a gremlin here: :finger:

& one here:

and add a pic here:

peace out mang.
