you can buy peyote seeds off ebay, i would get 100, sow 20-40 and use the rest to trade with. I can trade with you for some tri panchoi aka peruvian torch seeds. And you can also buy pedro cuttings and peyote babies off ebay too for a price. I live in us too and im growing pedro, have no fear its ilegal because it was being overharvested and its easier to dose and sell then pedro/torch.

It's a rather grey area. Stricly speaking, San Pedro cacti are everywhere, including some government properiety, apparently. This makes them completely legal, as long as you're not preparing them for ingestion.
Peruvian Torch is also perfectly legal, but less common in public areas, making it a little less of a safety factor, but only theorectically. The likelyhood of being busted for either one is extremely small.
Peyote, well, you already know, is illegal except for those who are among the Church of Native Americans. It would be extremely hard to get in the US, and probably not worth it.
As far as alkaloid content, I really don't know. People say different things. Someone else might be better able to help you.

I would check out www.plant-planet.net - great site. There is a sale going on right now for Pedros, but they sell Pedros at many local plant shops too. Anyway, I've read that the Trichocereus bridgesii has a higher mescaline concentration then San Pedro but grows slower (I think thats why many people buy the San Pedro, it's fast growing), but I haven't heard that for Trichocereus peruvianus. I don't know about them being legal, but there hasn't been a case where someone has been arrested for just growing the cactus. As you already stated, the peyote isn't. Peyote takes a long time to grow from seed (if you are going to buy it from that guy on ebay), I think its something like 8 years from seed to a mature cactus, but I could be a little off on that, I'm going to have to double check that (if it isn't 8 years, it's close because those are some slow slow growers).

What I meant by that was if someone was just buying the cactus for just the mescaline (I'm not saying you are TheHateCamel) then I wouldn't suggest getting seeds because of how long it takes to grow, but of course if your looking for an exotic plant that would make a great addition to any garden then I would definitely purchase the seeds/live plant. I would like to grow one but I live in the states and I don't want to deal with any legal issues so I'll stick with my Pedros and other cactuses.
