Damaged mushroom ID
    #3123338 - 09/11/04 06:51 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

My wife found this mushroom in our yard, it is somewhat damaged, and our 2 year old son was playing nearby. We're fairly certain that the damage was by some one stepping on it, and not our son eating it. However, we would like to know what this mushroom is.

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)

North eastern US (Connecticut), there is a small bit of dirt on the stem. It was growing in a shady lawn, we've had some wet and overcast days lately. I found two stems broken off at the ground, but only one mushroom.

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)

Gills are white, I can't tell if they're attached or not.

c. Measurements of cap and stem.

Cap is about 2" in diameter, stem is about 1.5" tall, and 1/2" thick.

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

Stem is white inside and out, solid, and dry when broken.

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)

Cap has a brown skin, white flesh, and white gills. The skin on the cap is smooth. It was probably round and concave, but that is hard to tell. There is a 1/8" hold in the skin, it looks like it may have grown that way. The hole is visible in the first picture.

f. Spore print color (very important!)

I don't know how to do this, and the underside of the mushroom is very damaged, so it may not be possible.

g. Color that the mushroom bruises

There was no color change when bruised.

h. Scent of mushroom

The cap has a mildewy smell to it, the stem has no discernable odor.

Wow man that's a tough one. The good news is that it does not look deadly. My best advice is to save the mushroom for chemical analysis on the off chance that your kid gets sick. It still may be possible to obtain a spore print. Take a peice of the cap with the gills still intact and place it gill down on a piece of tinfoil (My intuition tells me that it will probably be white); let it sit over night and see if there is a print in the morning.

Yikes! It's cases like this that make me thankful that my parents always told me *ALL* mushrooms were deadly :P

looks like it may be some type of russula to me...
I'm in Rhode Island and the dark purple ones are
just about all over right now....

I came to this conclusion by the appearance of the stipe...
It looks crumbly..photo5
the dark purple cap, and the way the pelicle peels off
as shown in photo3...
gill attachment in photo5..

It looks pretty old and ragged....

Then again I could be wrong...
russulas are hard to ID to species from what I understand.....

I would second the Russula guess.
Most Russulas are not poisonous and most of the ones which are poisonous stain a darker color (which it sounds like yours doesn't). Also, the ones which are poisonous are not deadly just achy/painful, at least to a healthy adult, extra care should be taken for such a young child.

Peace, good luck.

The spore print was bright white.

I looked for Russula pictures and found a few pictures of Russula Cyanoxantha, that seem to match very well.

Apparently it is edible, but we won't be eating it...

We will keep it for a few days in case he gets ill.

Many thanks for your help.

If a child ate it and didn't get ill within 24 hours, you're way past the point where you need to worry about it. The toxins in the poisonous Russulas would have shown definite symptoms within that much time.
