??????? whats up?
    #3123090 - 09/11/04 07:29 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so i just posted on my recent excitment,

I have a PMP, my light source is on the inside of the pmp. its actually a fishtank grow bulb for natural growth of water plants and such. ok so i have 3 cakes in my pmp all of which are doing quite well however the sides that point into the light dont seem to be doing much of anything no pins, no fluffy mycial growth nothing. I have a current light cycle of 15 hours on 9 off. is it the long on light cycle?

i think 15 hours would be too long, mushrooms are not like plants where the more light you give them the bigger they grow, try 12hours on 12 hours of time

im not sure about that actually, if i were a mushroom i would get confused lol, start to grow up then the lights go out, ohhh better go another way, then the lights come on, oh ill stop going that way and grow up lol, try it out and see what it does, also you could see what it does to "soft" the light up abit, is it just the light going directly onto the fruiting cakes?

inside of the PMP is not good, thats like an overload of light for them, so the sides of the cake that are directly facing the light are not fruiting?? If you can put a light for them on top of the PMP so just a small amount of "warm" light can get in that is all they need

Ok, so what i did is make a shroud or lamp shade for it out of tinfoil. the light is decresed alot but still a fair amount. I hope it works better for the other side of the cake.

Also if that light gives off lots of heat (looks like it), you probably have a temperature problem in there. Fluorescents or LED's are better for not giving off lots of heat if you want to rig them inside your lid, and as was said you only need low intensity and in fact high intensity is bad. People have had major success with even three high intensity LEDs which maybe put off like 10 candlepower and no heat. That bulb is probably more than 1000 candlepower at a lame guess. Also you don't need the wide spectrum in in fact if the UV is too much it will kill mycelium or make it mutate. They grow well in nature in the shade and such for a reason... you basically have the Sun on your box with them. If you were growing something green like tomatos then you'd be doing great.

ok awesome, however i was using that for keeping the temp up. I have no temp problem becuase its getting cold around here now. It was keeping the pmp at an even 75 when on... i have a heater to use but only 2 outlets so no more incubator if i wanted heater and light in the pmp at the same time :-\

The blue is not so important, as long as the source you use has a good amount of blue in the 'mix' of light it gives.  You can check that by using a prism to cast a rainbow on paper, if it has a good fat blue band then you're all good.  Most lights have plenty of blue anyway.  Some have too much UV (for my taste), though you can't tell that from a spectra since it's invisible even when broken out by a prism.  Generally lights which are called "cool" are bluer and those which are "warm" are more red, and frosted bulbs work better than clear (unless you use a diffuser or otherwise keep the harsh light off the mycelium directly).

Using it for heat when you do need heat is great.  Just keep it around where you have it (75F).  Good job there.  The foil 'diffuser' will likely solve the immediate problem you were having.  I have the opposite problem where I need to cool mine even with the fluoro I use, or so I suspect.

Blue christmas lights would be plenty of light as well, if it gives you enough heat since you want to keep the light and heat coming from the same source.

But really you should be good now, with the foil on there.  Quit trying to second guess it or you'll go crazy (like most of us).  :crazy2:

Scape, what you are doing is fine IMO. Unless you have a heat problem you really can't give the myc too much or too little light (as long as you give them some). No normal lights, except HPS, metal halide, and other high intensity lights, put out a significant ammount of UV so don't worry about that.

You are probably not getting pins on the sides that face the light because cakes usually don't pin from the tops very much, especially the first flush. They usually pin from the base. You should also get pins around the top rim at some point during the first or second flushes, but a lot of time the conditions must be exactly right to get pins directly off the top.
