One large Admiral Bolete... and more!
    #3116810 - 09/09/04 11:57 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Went hiking today in the Cascades with @cro in hopes of finding some chantrelles... no luck there, but we did find this rather large admiral bolete (Boletus mirabilis)!!!  at least, that's what we're pretty sure it is!  it was growing directly off a rotting conifer, had no staining and had a velvety looking cap.

we also found this ganoderma, and we attempted to stain it to say "shroomery", but we ran out of room and only fit "shroom"

there was also this crazy little mushroom with a clear, slimy veil!  we have no clue as to what it might be, so any insight is appreciated!  Hygrocybe??

on our way out we found a large patch of oysters growing up a hardwood, but it was getting dark.  if you spot two crazy people climbing trees on the side of the road tomorrow in Washington, you know who it is!!

this weather has been amazing for mushrooms, lots of Russula's up as well!

thats all for now, hopefully tomorrow we'll have some chantrelle and oyster pics!!

:sun:

Probably genus Hygrophorus.

I think it looks a bit like Gomphidius glutinosus. Is the base of the stipe yellow (hard to tell by the picture)?

The colors are hard to tell from the picture, I was just trying to shoot the jelly veil. The cap is a pinkish-purple color and the stipe starts out white then changing to yellow, pink and finally red going down the mushroom.

Sorry, didn't realize you were seeking an ID confirmation. The features, according to Bessette, et. al., are:

Cap 2 - 8 inches wide, dark maroon, maroon-brown, or reddish brown, surface granular or roughened.

Tube surface yellow to greenish yellow, slowly staining darker yellow when bruised.

Stalk maroon-brown, enlarged at base, with coarse, netlike ridges on upper stalk.

Found on ground beside rotting stumps or logs.

Happy mushrooming!

exactly, thats what i read in MD and it fits the characteristics completely.

but as i'm rather new at attempting IDs outside of psilocybes i just wanted to make sure!

thanks!

that is also a nice fresh reishi specimen, they are hard to find like that.

That is definately Boletus mirabilis. It should have a lemony taste when cooked.
