bacteria isnt bad
the bacteria your thinking of is nitrobacter (the main one you cultivate in pond filters), it uses nitrite and ammonia (ium) and its end product is nitrate. If you have fish, you definatly do not want ammonia... and nitrite is much more toxic than nitrate....

regardless..
porosity is good for humidification, so long as it "wicks" water well.

The whole idea of the bio filter was so you didnt have to use chemicals to keep yer water clean, the bacteria does...so you wouldnt be adding any chemicals at all...but i still see yer point especially after reading what type of bacteria like to live in there
