Question about jar cooling
    #3121017 - 09/10/04 11:48 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

After putting the PF jars in the steamer for an hour, can I put them in the frig afterwards to shorten the cooling time? I wouldnt let it get cold, just till it's not hot anymore.

Yes you can.

I would let them cool down a bit before you do though.

Just be carefull because hot glass to cool temperatures can cause them to crack if its to drastic. I would let them cool at room temp for a little bit and then stick them in the fridge to finish the job.

I would post a story about a lab tech that got badly burned, but I'm sure that everyone here has already read it and is sick of it.

Anyway, frock is right. You must let the jars cool before removing them. If you can hold them for 2+ seconds is a good guide. They don't have to be totally cool, but make sure that it won't badly burn you if one explodes or you drop it.

I just get a hot pad or a towel and remove them with that. If you can remove a casserole after 45min at 375 or so you can take it out of the pressure cooker.

There is some confusion here. Some of us are talking about the temperature of the jars to put into the fridge with and some of us are taking about when we pull them out of the pc.

Personally I use oven gloves to pull them out of the pc, as soon as the top is open. Would do it if I didn't have the oven gloves though.

if you want them to cool down really fast, try filling up the sink about half way up the jars and let them soak. They should be cool enough in a few minutes

look at the inital question he asked if he could take them out of the steamer and put them in the fridge to reduce cooling time. THis is not a good idea, the jars will explode. You should allow them to cool for a good 12 hours, i mean honestly 12 hours isnt shit i know you want it done faster but dont waste your time.

I let all my shit cool before fridging it.

Also remember, the core temp of something might not be as cold as the outside feels. You should really let them sit over night or about 4+ hours spread away from each other so that they can cool into the air better.

I would never put my shit in a sink to cool them unless the sink was really unused and basically sterile.

The best way to cool shit is to prep em late night and sleep. Wake up and finnish em.

The jars will not explode because they are not fully sealed so if pressure does build up it will escape. As I said earlier though, wait a while because as people have pointed out, glass will crack if it is exposed to fast temp change.

Your best bet would be to just let them sit and cool in the PC overnight (7+ hours)

Dude taht fast of a heat up to cool down causes the glass it self to explode. If you take a jar right from you pc and throw it in the fridge i guarrentee it will be broken very soon if not as soon as you close the door. Its the expansion and contration of the glass molecules. Seriously dude. Its like if you put cold water into a bunch of boiling jars the cold water will cause the jar to shatter.
