still on the search for gyms here in michigan... i ran across these and they don't really look like gym's i've seen (i've only ever seen them online and never in real life) but some of the characteristics looked similar...

a. Habitat - michigan, forest floor, not growing directly out of wood that i could see... b. Characteristics of the gills - large brown/red, not attached to stem c. Measurements of cap and stem - caps large, big ones 8in , stem thick and meaty d. Characteristics of the stem - very pale, light, almost white e. Characteristics of the cap - large wavy, f. Spore print color - taking one now g. Color that the mushroom bruises - nothing noticable h. Scent of mushroom - not good with mushroom specific scents yet.. like a mushroom
the pics i had of the large caps didn't come out clear at all i'll go take some more tomarrow... i hope you can get an idea of the caps from the younger ones... the larger ones were about the same in color but some rather wavy
i did notice that on the younger ones there was a veil attached to the stem still but no noticeable remnants of a veil or line or mark on the stem where one would have been on the larger ones
i don't think that these are the gyms i'm searching for but i don't know a whole lot about gyms either.. the size and the gills and i think the veil are about what i expect to find with gyms but the color and something else i can't put my finger on told me no...
anyways i'll keep lookin

Those look like Cortinarius. The easiest difference between them is that almost all Cortinarius grow on the ground and Gymnopilus grow on wood.
Happy mushrooming!
