Preserving cactus pollen
    #3117559 - 09/10/04 04:27 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Today I discovered a little bud hidden in the fluff on top of one of my lophs.
They flower two or three times a year and hardly ever at the same time. I would like to cross pollinate the plants, so I was wondering, if I took the stamens of this flower and saved them in a little ziploc bag, could I use them at a later date to pollinate a different plant? And if so, how long would the pollen be viable?

Any thoughts or experiences with this?

You can save the stamen in a Ziploc bag, but I have found that it is much easier to store the pollen itself on a small paint brush.

I pollinate my Lophophora with a small paint brush and store the extra pollen on the brush. The brush head can then be placed into a small Ziploc and the hole thing can be placed into the refrigerator. Pollen will maintain its viability longer if it is kept dry and cool.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try the brush method.
