Tieing the knot
    #3117713 - 09/10/04 07:44 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I hear so many people bitch about their marriages but you'll never hear that shit from me. My wife is the best thing that ever happened to me and she continues to enrich my life infinitely. I can't, for the life of me, comprehend why people just rush headlong into it. The idiocy that runs rampant in relationships ultimately gives marriage a bad name. Practically everyone that meets me and my wife as a couple expresses admiration and/or jealousy at our level of commitment and mutual respect.

Coming from a sucessful marriage it is easy to spot the reasons other folks' relationships aren't working out so great. OTOH, it is also easy to recognise a great couple when you do see them.

One such couple would have to be our very own afoaf and his girl with whom I've had the pleasure of spending some quality time with. From what I can tell these two are great complements to each other and they have definitely given themselves the time to ascertain that the other is right for them.

afoaf will be tieing his own knot this very weekend. i ask that this community, in which he is well entrenched, extend their well wishes and support in the form of publicly posted or privately mailed congratulations.

spread the vibe :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

Me too, but I'm not married. Arguements happen, but I think they're good for us for developing individually.

I bitch about it sometimes only because I got married for the wrong reasons. My own fault totally. It was a lesson well learned. Next time I'll just marry for sex...really good sex!

Sometimes people change over time, and you dont change in positive ways towards each other.  I dont think its always stupidity or rushing things that causes a bad marriage and it should be over generalized like that.

Its good to see there ARE people who are happy, consider yourself lucky to hav found that one.  Ive met very few people who are truly meant to be, so far the list is topped by oDin and Annie, my marriage rolemodels if anything.

Good luck with life

Annie and oDin get a mushroom medal for being the most functional married couple I have ever met in my entire life.

Best of luck to anyone that's jumping off that cliff.  I think that if you're serious about what you are looking for in a relationsip and you partner mostly feels the same way about that you are probably on the right track.  It takes honesty, and the hardest part is being honest with yourself.

Indeed. I've never met a married couple that gets along quite as well as them. But then again, maybe the fact that they're childless might have something to do with that.

hmm, yeah, we're childless by choice and will probably remain so.

btw, bom, you met us you prolly just didn't know it.

i know a handful of truly successful marriages but the overwhelming majority range from dysfunctional to catastrophic.

mnd, you pointed out that people change. it has been our experience that any changes have been for the overall well-being for the both of us. as weird as it might sound it seems as if the secret to our success was the fact that we met each other at our lowest and worst points in life and simply chose to accept each as precisely what we were. we very much grew up together. and we continue to do so.

another interesting aspect was that neither of us had ever considered marriage an imaginable possibility for our respective futures. we could both be quoted by our friends as having stated, "I will never get married". Within the 1st week of having met we both felt and discussed the possibility but wisely decided right then and there that we would wait at least 2 years. we married on the 2 year anniversay of the day we met.

any idea how long annie and odin have been together?

yeah, they've got a decade on us.

i'd be curious to see a graph of marriage failure rate against years together.

just wildly guessing based on personal observation i'd say the failure rate is very high for the first 5-8 years then lulls from say years 9-15 or so then spikes again around years 20-25 and then steadily goes back down to near zero.
wildly guessing, of course.

btw, those handful of successes i mentioned, they are all HS sweethearts. my wife and i aren't even from the same state.
