Vermiculite Outlawed.
    #311727 - 05/07/01 08:24 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I've yet to see this mentioned anywhere on the boards which i found very surprising. Most forms Vermiculite have been outlawed in the New England Area...Apparently it contains high amounts of Asbestos which is extremely toxic. Vendors are allowed to sell there remaining stock but cannot restock it...Keep in mind all this information came from the sales dude at Home Depot and the Owner of a Local-area Gardening Company (Frank's)...both had extremely similar accounts.

Ya its already down south. They are outlawing the finer ground vermiculite, and selling the coarser ground chunky shit in its place....i like the chunky stuff better anyways

I remember when this was all malls and concrete, shame what they have done!

had that trouble today, almost had a panic attack trying to find verm.

Got some nice potting soil mix with polymers which hold water, contains lime stone, polymers, peat moss, and some perlite.

Gonna see if it works as a casing layer, but the PF tek is history.

If you go to the Schultz website you can read the whole story of the asbestos scare. I far as I know they are the only brand to be affected.

Try some other stores?

Actually, this whole vermiculite/asbestos thing has been posted over and over again not only here, but on DD, ADM, and mycotopia. Thing all came about because of some contaminated verm from asbestos, somebody here had a link to the shultz site that explained the whole thing.

Home Depot, Walmart, etc. - are all in the process of pulling verm of the shelfs in New England especially. The people I've talked to in Home Depot didn't know shit, when asked if they carry vermiculte, this old geeser looked at me as if I was a ghost and proclaimed...."We don't carry it anymore, IT CAUSES CANCER!" - I just shook my head and walked away.

This whole thing will blow over in a few months IMO..........

I thought I was out of luck today, too, but then I visited my reputable local nursery/garden center and found it with no problem. So, I'd suggest forgetting the national chains and just start calling up every locally-owned shop until you find some. They also tend to be much more knowledgable than the guys at Home Depot and their ilk. I'm pretty confident that you'll find it. And if you do, I suggest stocking up; there's no telling when this scare will end.

And, at the worst, there's always mail-order. I think the Shroomery mentions www.homeharvest.com as an online supplier. Good luck!

I use jiffy mix myself, I wonder if they are going to stop using vermiculite. I guess if this sticks then we are going to have to find a new recipe to replace the pf tek.

not to "rub it in," folks, but the funniest thing happened to me at Wallmart about 3 months ago.

While looking for vermiculite, they were sold out of the regular size bags. . .but had JUST ONE of these industrial sized 10 lb. bags sitting on a pallett. It was about 3 feet around, and almost as tall as me.

I told the guy I just needed "a little."

He filled a 100 gallon plastic garbage bag FULL of the shit for me. . . and then scanned the UPC of the SMALL BAG for me, 'cause I didn't take the whole thing.

So I ended up with about 10 years worth of vermiculite for $3.49 plus tax.

It just makes me grin like a happy kid when I see all the availabiltiy issues people are posting about vermiculite.

Don't get me wrong. . . I don't revel in your misfortune. . .I'm just happy that for ONCE. . . I made out like a bandit!

LOL

trouble finding it in the New England area.... i just went to "Frank's Nursery" and bought more vermiculite than i could carry (10, yeah TEN bags). Looks like the same shit, different day. I keep hearing about this shortage, but i haven't seen it yet. in either case, i have a whole fuking lot more than i'll ever need for the rest my days. later!
