fabric softener is basicly a soap, it would inhibit growth a little but I cant see it preventing growth completely

how long are you allowing the mycelium to colonize before
you inocculate your grain

Soap would kill the mycelium IMHO. Either that or you are getting the corn too dry. Stop using the towel and use the standard strainer method. GL

overnight.... actually more like overnight and a day. I cant belive thats the problem.

Well, one clue might be the karo itself. It hasnt seemed to get very full. It seemed like it started quick, a good quarter sized blob in there, then after a week later still incubating it really hasnt gotten bigger. Now i figured this was because the karo was a little carmalized. But now maybe it could be the mycelium died. Just a thought, sound like im onto something?

on a lighter note, some old PB i had colonizing was cased a two weeks ago. It was only one halfpint jar, and i really just wanted to try the caseing thing. So i threw it into a good sized container with straight verm top and bottom. Now listen, the grain was only one layer thick, many kernals didnt even touch eachother. Better yet i didnt even mist it during the first fruiting stage. Well to my surprise i have about 7 stalks growing healthy now! haha, ididnt even try and its working ...

My trouble is seeming to be the jar colonization. Actually, the Karo tek. The only jars i got to colonize were from fresh spores.

Not to bring me down. ill get it;)

the residues left on the towels are insignifigant, dry corn is a distinct possibility and thats where my next line of questioning would have gone...

but its not dry. After PC'ing the corn for 15min, the kernals expanded to twice their size. I rollded them in a towel to make them dry to the touch. Also i noticed i could speeze them and they would smush out a little. Then, i loaded them into jars and let the jars sit overnight. Then i pc'ed them for a little over an hour at 15psi. After cooled enough to grab i looked at them and they appeared a little wet again, the moisture inside the kernals has re-soaked the shells. Water did not get inside the jars, im positive of that.

They didnt seem to wet at all, to me they looked perfect. Not clanky clanky when i shook, and some kernals were exploded, maybe say a 1 to 15 ratio. They really looked so good i wanted to eat em.

I am gonna try another one of my karo jars i had going, this time ill just test 6 jars. This karo was better in that it was still white after sterilizing, but i dont know because there isnt a whole lot of mycelium in there, just a chunk- dont know if its good or not. we'll see wont we?

You could try adding just a little verm to the corn, even just a little layer on the bottom of each jar to suck up any extra water, instead of towel drying the surface of them. I think maybe the outer hull water content is helpful for the mycelium culture to wick around nicely enough to get it going. It needs to hook into the core of the exploded kernels in enough places and connect with other strands so it can keep building up and gain enough power to grow over the more closed up kernels. You might be squeezing a little water out of many of the kernels, if you're a bit too 'pressing' in your drying method also, somehow.

You might also try using a better media than corn syrup water. Malt extract or potato dextrose broth are both much healthier for the mycelium.
