CATS and SHROOMS!
    #311640 - 05/07/01 07:11 PM (23 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, I need an answer to this one ASAP. I just walked down my friend's hallway about 15 minutes ago and found a mycelium cake of his lying on the floor. Apparently, my friend's kitten who seems to be about 6 pounds or so found the tupperware full of four cakes with only plastic wrap on top, enjoyed the smell, and decided to pick one up by his teeth and bring it into the hallway. It doesn't look like he consumed much if any of the mycelium cake itself (BRF and VERM), but there was on very small mushroom growing out of it which he bit the cap off of. The shroom was about 3-4 days old and the cap which he ate was about the size of a pushpin. What the hell can I do about this? It's not like we can go to the vet or anything and I don't have a clue how to pump a cats stomach...should we try to make him puke it up or anything? I've just been watching him so far...ANY IDEAS PLEASE?

The cat wont die. The cat probably wouldn't die if it ate a whole pound of shrooms, the OD death of a half kilo rat is @ 15grams of pure psilocybin. I have a couple of cats myself, one day, I came home to find my drying container flipped over, and half an ounce of dried shrooms scattered around my apartment. Cats were fine, I was not.

Sorry but your arithmetic is incorrect.

The LD50 for psilocybine in a human is that you would have to eat your body weight in psilocybine (approx. 160 pounds), or 19 grams of the pure chemical (Ott, 1963, Pharmacotheon)

at your weight suggestion actually about 130 rats could die eating 15 grams of psilocine.

Have a shroomy day and may all of your days be shroomy.

In either case, the cat'll be fine.

In the case of LSD I understand it also depends on the animal itself. Whether the same is true for shrooms, I don't know. Meanwhile, here is a link relating to this subject...
