Marasmius oreades (Fairy Ring Mushrooms) pics
    #3105059 - 09/07/04 06:53 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

While out for a walk, my wife came across this
partial Fairy Ring of Marasmius oreades:

We didn't harvest any, however wouldn't mind attempting to grow this edible.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

Same here. All of my attempts at a tissue clone have failed however. I have prints, but I would rather not start from spores. It appears information is limited on the cultivation of this species. I believe Pinback is trying to cultivate it...

ooooooooohhhh, so that's what those are. Me and my girlfriend have seen those all over the place lately. We had a ring growing right by where I park my truck the other day. I wasn't sure what they were, so we didn't touch em.

I will probably be more prepared to take a tissue
sample from a young button when next season
rolls around.

JBPrint, not all fairy ring mushrooms are edible or
Marismius ordeades.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

This is essential, and the exact reason I think all my clones failed. I was never able to find this mushroom in a small, immature specimen. This mushroom grows, dries out, then rehydrates and continues to grow. This is why I think it is essential to find a small mushroom before it enters the suspended animation stage. The tissue clones just did not take to the medium, even though they were not dry...

They are still all over my yard, I just saw some today. I may give it another go...

Here is some info from Mushrooms Demystified, David Arora.

Marasmius oreades (Fairy Ring Mushroom)

Edibility: Delectably delicious. He says to discard the stems and just bring home the caps (for eating). and they can be added into many different meals.

Comments: Be especially careful not to confuse it with the poisonous Clitocybe dealbata, which is white spored and grows in grass often with M. oreades, but has thin crowded adnate to decurrent gills and a convex to plane (not unbonate) cap.

Just because it grows in a ring does not mean it is M oreades. Other similar mushrooms found in circles are Clitocybe dealbata, M. albogriseus, M strictipes, M nigrodiscus, and Collybia luxurians..

... so you going to eat these things or what?
 hehehe

Hey GG...

What's up with the moving to OR in your profile?!!

... so you going to eat these things or what?

Naw... only took home a virtual harvest. Possibly next
season I will find a ring with some buttons, and get a
good specimen for taking a tissue sample.

I know that other (inedible/posionous) types of mushies
grow in Fairy Rings or crescent shape colonies. The pics
shown are definitely M. oreades.

With harvesting from somebody's lawn, you are also
ingesting the nasty stuff they may put on it to keep it
green and bug free.  :crazy2:

Namaste my Friend, :sun:

I've tried to cultivate them from multispore, but not succeeded in getting fruits. Unfortunately, things are going pretty slow here...

Here is an older thread about them: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum13&Number=2600034&Forum=f13

Nomad,

That has been set there for several months now.

It just hasn't happened yet, but Oregon is my destination.
-It could take months, it could take years, but it will occur within my lifetime.

In the words of bob Marley & the Wailers:
"One bright morning,
When man work is over,
I'm going to fly,
Fly away home."

Oregon is my promised land.

I wasnt doubting you found the Fairy Ring Shroom,
I just typed some extra info from the book for ya.

Keep shroomin,

I just got home from a bike ride and found a new patch of
Gymnopilus luteofolius.
By tommorrow the whole patch will explode with fruit
Mostly just pins right now
And i only observed one little pin that had blue on its cap.

GG

Oh and i will probably be emailing you more info tonight via email.

GG
