having trouble finding a local source for whole rye. what other whole grains are recommended? would barley be amoung them? barley seems to be far more available in my region than rye (for some strange reason). thanks in advance

I've just inoculated some pearl barley (250g pearl barley put in a jug, covered with 500mL boiling water, jug covered with cling-film and left overnight. Final weight after straining, 465g. Then put in jars and PC'd etc). Growth hasn't started yet so I can't say anything about that, but I can tell you that it likes to clump together. A lot. Shaking it around is not easy!! Other than that, I have a good feeling about it .

Just a little update for ya: First signs of germination were on Sept 1st, (four days after inoculation) and it seems to be growing just fine. I have little to compare its progress to, but it is definitely working . I was going to get a thermometer today to see what the temperature is, but I forgot! Oh well, at least I got stuff for a simple little glove box . I'll get a thermometer tomorrow and let you know... And I'll get some pics when fully colonised, and make a log out of it. I intend to do some mini casings...

AFOAF has some jars of wheat berries that colonized VERY quickly after being innoculated with spore syringes. The jars haven't been used for spawn quite yet, but they seem to work fine...they look just like rye berries but were available at the local grocery store.

i normally use milo bought from the feed store 4.50 for a 50lb bag. What do u mean fucknuckle that u got low rates with whole flax seed? It is impossible to use whole flax as spawn since it becomes a thick gummy mess if u do this.

Exactly But, I have a knack for getting water content just right and I don't shake my jars up so let it stick. Even with all that it still sucks

The first time I used it did. The second time I used I soaked it for 4 hours and pc'd it.
It still was somewhat gooey but it still colinized and I still used it. Just it sucked Can't you read??
And I think part of the confusion is I didn't use it for a spawn I used it as a cake. But I can tell you it would have broke up just fine, a little difficult mabey ,it would have worked. But even as a cake it did not perform well.
Any grain will work as a spawn, it is all about water content. Spawn grains should be kinda dry and the grains should be whole and not split after pcing. When I do spawn I never simmer it or soak more than 12 hours.
And welcome to the shroomery
