PF tek
    #3113661 - 09/09/04 03:19 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone, I just started doing the PF-tek for the first time and it's been two days since the jars have been inoculated.

There are no signs of colonization and im starting to get worried (even though it says it takes 3-5 days for the first signs). I just feel like i did something wrong.

Whats the longest anyone has had to wait before anything started happening? Also, would it be allright to reinject some spores after nothings happening, if by chance they werent cool enough after sterilizing them and that is what the problem was?

Don't worry. 2 days are nothing, especially at lower temperature.

Well, also, the mix of verm/BRF/water in the jars doesn't look like alot of the pictures. It is much darker and appears more wet.

I used a medium grade vermiculite, organic brown rice grinded with a coffe grinder (it is a light brown color not white) and tap water.

A lot of water can slow the growth of mycelium and encourage contams. What's your incubation temp?

The longest dude has had to wait is 5 full days. As all newbies learn (whether they like it or not) patience is the key to winning this game. If you get all impatient and keep checking on your sutff and trying to tweak your strategies to speed things up on the fly you are really gonna fuck up.

Take your time, be overly patient, and follow the teks to the t.

(You'll hear this several times before it starts making any sense).

If it says it takes 3-5 days for first signs, why would you even contemplate seeing signs at 2 days?

Now I don't mind you posting this for reassurance but please, don't go doing anything to your jars for atleast a week!  You can worry as much as you want, just don't do anything.

Believe me when I say almost every person who has ever done this has been through this period you are in now.  If you can, forget about those jars for a week.

Allright, thanks.

The room temperature is about 72-80 degrees F.

Also, what if the injected spores werent directly on the side up against the jar wall, but more in the middle of the substrate?

It might take longer if they didn't spread as much as they would have down the side of the glass. Depends on how tight the substrate is packed. Also would cause less unique injection locations so it might take longer then too.

Then you will have to wait for the myc to grow to the glass to see it.You will have to wait a lot longer.Follow the tek,it works.

Your temps could be a bit warmer, more like 82-86, my grower had very long incubation times when they tried doing it without a tub-in-tub incubator, so long in fact that after two weeks they had done absolutely nothing - but once they were in the incubator there was action in a few days. Also the stability of temperature seems important, so if your temps swing daily then that could 'confuse' them. These are the few reasons the tub-in-tub works so nicely.

Also it seems some strains just take longer in some stages than others. Some like more heat, some like less, some don't care. B+ is one which comes to mind that seems to enjoy very high (86F) temps to germinate and colonize.

My grower also dealt with too much water, they still worked OK but were slower and they were not impressed with the overall coverage when they hit 100% since some of the 'core' was not solid with mycelium (just 'naked' substrate) even though the outside was. They also could not chop the rice and so used it whole which really screwed things up, but they still worked OK. With the higher tub-in-tub temps you could hope for some additional drying from evaporation, or put them upside down on squares of quad-folded paper towel so as to try and get some of the extra water to 'drain' out. Generally this is mostly futile but it feels good to be doing something that 'might' help sometimes, as long as it really doesn't have any negative risks.

Anywhere from 7 to 12 days seems average, though sometimes faster and sometimes slower, mostly dependent on temps but complicated by water content overage.

Thanks a lot man.

I Think I'll work on making the jars overall temperature warmer. I'll see what i can do.
