metal and microwaves done mix... there are people that have had sucess and others that have failed... since you are new you should start with the PF tek
it simply invovles a large pot of water and your jars

the PF tek will give you an easy start to learn the basics before
start messing around with that new fangled technology stuff

Welcome to the Shroomery DigitSix.  Like the pic in your sig, that you?

Anyway, don't use a microwave, they're evil.  If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can always try the boiling tek.  It's somewhat successful.  Pressure cooker's are basically a must if you plan on growing for a long period of time though.

Anyway, GL, keep in touch, and post your first growing experience for us all. (With pictures! )

Hey, dude just got a 8qt pressure cooker from Ebay. Fast delivery, and with shipping it was under $40. Quite a steal if you ask me. Check it out.

Dude has gone down the road of trying to boil jars before and it is not perfect. You will end up with SOME contamination IME.

Ok I have actually had some good microwave experience so perhaps I can suggest some tips.

If you insist on doing it,

- You are going to have trouble putting anythign in with its lid on because lids are usually metal or if you use clingfilm or plastic, the clingfilm can melt and the plastic can pop off due to pressure internally in the jar (I used to hate that massive pop that you hear when a jar blows its contents).

- If you use plastic, it will be burnt by the substrate (ie, it can get too hot).

- In terms of time, I would suggest you experiment with pulsing. So microwave for say 5 minutes and then let cool, do again. Do a few times.

I did have quite a decent measure of success with it. It was pretty tough though, once absolutely nuked a plastic container and the house stank really bad .

you could always just buy presterilized substrate from mycobag.com
they have all different substrates to choose from.

Just buy a PC for christ's sake! It's almost cheaper than buying a pot to boil the jars in. If you can't afford that then you are just too poor to grow shrooms, find another hobby... like collecting pennies from the sidewalk.
