I have these little mushrooms that grow every year in a certain part of my lawn. My question is; what are these mushrooms? I will try and describe them, they are usualy very short, only about 3". They have a light brown cap with black gills. I cant remeber what the stem looks like, its thin though.

Without a picture it would be virtually impossible to tell which of the more than 1000 LBM's you are describing.
LBM's stands for little brown mushrooms, meaning any mushroom smaller than three inches high.
Maybe you can post some pictures.

YES post some pictures when you have the chance. Meantime I'll cast a wide net & suggest that the combination of size, lawn habitat & black gills (could they be dark brown or dark purplish-grey?) narrows the probable genera to Coprinus, Panaeolus, Stropharia, small Agaricus, Pholiota, or by some remote chance Psilocybe stuntzii complex.
Other typical lawn-lovers have lighter gills--white in the case of Marasmius or Clitocybe, yellowish in Conocybe, Bolbitius, Galerina, etc.
None of these should be eaten except possibly Marasmius oreades (the "fairy ring" mushroom) which is safe & tasty once you learn to recognize it.
