Wanted: WBS Tips
    #3113159 - 09/09/04 11:25 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Im defiantly new, and Im defiantly open to suggestions.

Ive been successful w/ pf cakes several times now using Chitwan and making my own prints. The problem Im having is moving up to wbs. Here are the steps I use.

I soak wbs overnight. Strain and rinsed several times. Fill jars a little more than halfway leaving marginal water in bottom. PC for 1hr 15 mins. Cool and Inoculate. (Ive been using the poor man's agar to make cultures with much success.) The problem is they take forever to completely cover the wbs. I had wet rot 1 time but that wasnt an issue. The real problem is getting really strong culture to form. Should the wbs be simmered before PCing? Will adding water to my current jars help? Just how developed does the mycelium need to be? and any advice for the transfer from jars to casing. The jars Ive attempted to case so far have suffered from sweet rot and had to be tossed. Any comment will be appreciated!

Soak 24 hours
simmer until grains just start to split
drain very,very well
fill jars 75%
Pc

You will need a flowhood or glovebox for doing tranfers

And welcome to the Shroomery

Awsome. Some of the teks listed dont even mention simmering the grain. Must be a little dated. Ive been using my oven as a psudo-hood with no complaints to date, but I bet thats why I lost 3 out of 12 my first try.

Just a note. Chitwan Spores from Sporeworks can finished BRF jars in just 8 or 9 days. Pins on day 17! amazing stuff compared to the others received. Its hard to have comtams when they finish that quick!

Thanks for the help

Soak overnight, rinse very well, and strain until no more water drips out!!!

Simmering is totally unnessesary!!!

Cover jars with tinfoil and PC for 70 min at 15psi.

If you have too much water in the jars the bottom will not colonize!

These pictures show one perfect jar and one that has too much water.

Well..... I would say you are right and wrong but, with only 2 posts and 2 jars  I DON"T KNOW

Also without a simmer and without you adding any water in those jars before PCing I can guarantee you will suffer in the fruiting. Soaked grains alone do not have enough water content.

The reason we simmer is to get the max water content.Unless you made a mistake in what you said I believe you must be adding water in the jars before Pcing. I have done this before ,but only once, because I learned the hard way.... Soak, drain, put into jars with no extra water and ended up with alot of tiny shrooms and you will too.
Goodluck and welcome to the shroomery

one way to help reduce the problem with excessive water is to add a little gypsum (drywall/sheetrock) you your mix when you load the jars...

that photo is an excellent example of where colonization will stop as well as how the jars will look... great photos...

with the larger and harder grains like Rye and Popcorn I would say the a simmer would be desirable, I've soaked WBS for 12 hours many times, drained and loaded jars and suffered no problems... the humidity here is pretty high normaly so they already had a higher moisture content... that may be a contributing factor

The mushrooms get most of their water from the casing material. Ex. Coir, verm, moopoo...etc.

And to back up my fantastic claims here are some pictures of mushroom grown using the before mentioned method!!!

Thank you Arohpohpol. I've been trying to tell these people this for some time now. Even with a 24hr soak and no simmering you can still have your grain be too wet. Your pics show this pretty clearly. Maybe now the noobs will quit arguing about this.
