Larger case vs. smaller

ARe there any disadvantages to a larger casings vs. a smaller casings other than contam spread? A friend has a fairly large grow space setup and he wants to try out a 4x1 casing in a rubbermaid container. Is he better off doing this than just make a bunch of small tray casings?

I have found that it is harder to get good second flushes with larger casings while smaller casings seem to improve with the second flush. I guess I'm having trouble getting the moisture balance rite when I rehydrate.
