Casing layers too thick?
    #3112737 - 09/09/04 08:45 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I saw this situation where the casing layer(espically the top layer) was thick and it was taking a long time to colonize the top of the casing container, like 10 days so far. On another container, the poo was spread thinly across the top of the colonized layer of seed and straw, so that container colonized quickly.

Sometimes it dosent even seem like the top layer will fully colonize at all, and that it will stop short, only colonizing below the surface. Can this happen, or with time will it overtake the casing no matter what? Spawn was used in 1:6 ratio, I thought it usually takes 5 days to fully colonize?

If your using poo then thats substrate not casing material.
Casing material is by definition devoid of nutrients.
Poo should compleatly colonise if the temps are right. Then you could add a casing layer of coir/verm etc or you could fruit straight off the poo.

I kind of had the same question with regards to casing material. If the top casing layer is too thick and taking too long to colonize, is it OK to brush a little off the top, or will this cause some unwanted disturbance of the mycellium? I know of a case where it appears to have a nicely developed mycellium layer but hasn't been penetrating the top layer because of the thickness of the top casing layer.

Casing layers over an 1in. thick are not beneficial and depending on structure can sufficate the substrate IMHO. Yes you can scrape/fork off excess and pinning will occur if triggered. GL guys

IMO the thinest casing layer you can get away with is the best,if the myc has to colonise excess casing media it leaves less nutes for fruits.

If you're careful and use clean latex gloves you could turn that casing over in your hands and tip the excess off. do it over and as close as possible to a clean surface just incase disaster strikes and it breaks/falls apart. It shouldn't.

If the casing is too thin you WILL miss the main benefit of the casing (water reservoir). Also just tip it at 45 degree angle use a "cleaned" fork and scrape across the surface to one side, then simply fork it off the edge of the tray. Nothing complicated about that. At least if shouldn't be!  Said with all respect hanky

I use a bottom casing layer and also mix casing media with the substrate (starters rez-effect) and that takes care of my casings water needs. So a thin top layer is no issue to me. I probably should have pointed that out.
Thanks.
