Pray for our farm and mycologist in Jamaica!
    #3113024 - 09/09/04 12:42 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Well, mother nature is dealing another nice little blow in the form of Category 5 Hurricane Ivan. Current tracking has it sheduled to devestate the island nation of Jamaica starting sometime Friday PM.

As many of you know. Sporeworks is a partner in a mushroom farming operation on the western end of the island, near Negril. Our mycologist in residence down there, Mule, is a good, dear, and old friend to many of us here on the boards.

Please send your prayers, Irie vibes, or whatever form of good wishes you may have to Mule as he prepares to get hit with one of the largest and nastiest storms of this season.

Jamaica historically doesn't get hit with very many hurricanes, being in a unique position that traditionally just misses many of the major storm tracks. Ivan, however, has different plans and appears to be headed to hit the island DEAD ON sometime in the next 24-48 hours.

We appreciate your prayers and support and Mule will feel good to know that we are all thinking about him while he weathers the storm and tries to save our farm from it's devastating winds and rains.

Much love!

For years I've been telling mule to wear his sunblock... now I need to tell him to take shelter!! My prayers go out to him and the farm.

As we have come to say in Florida "hunker down", best wishes go out to those on Jamaica.

Yeah, unfortuntely we are talking about an agricultural operation on what is essentially a third world island nation. Some of you may have some exposure to what "true" Jamaica is like (outside the mega resorts) so you'll have some sort of understanding about what type of shelter they have to work with.

Lucky for us we just built a very nice concrete block packing house that will do very well in this storm. We are very worried, however, about Mule's house on the propery, which is your basic Jamaican wood bungalow style dwelling.

It looks like it's going to hit sometime this evening, so you guys and gals be thinking about Mule. I'm sure he'll be OK, but our thoughts and prayers do matter to him!

It's the recovery that's going to be difficult. They certainly don't have the same kind of "rapid" repsonse teams to get power, water, supply lines and roads back open. This could cripple the entire county's infrastructure for over a year.

Latest damage forecasts put the strike of Ivan on Jamaica at catastrophic, saying they expect damage worse than gilbert gave in 1988.

Gilbert killed 45 people and caused $6 billion in damage.

Yeah, doesn't look good. I've been watching the sat images and the doppler radar on www.weather.com

http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atlstorm9/caribbeansatellite_large_animated.html

Doesn't look like it's going to spare any of it's punch. If there is good news at least it's been downgraded to Cat 4.. but is that really a big difference? Jesus this thing looks nasty!

Be thinking about Mule, looks like he's going to be experiening the brunt of this bitch for the next 24 hours starting this afternoon.

This may be some relatively good news:

Dangerous Ivan to brush southern Jamaica
3:30 P.M. ET Fri.,Sep.10,2004

M. Ressler, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

Maps: Hurricane Ivan
Hurricane Ivan remains a powerful and deadly Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. After ravaging Barbados and Grenada, Ivan skirted by Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao to the north. Now, Ivan is poised to brush past southern Jamaica. Since the core of Ivan's strongest winds is relatively small, Jamaica may be spared the worst of the hurricane although damaging winds are still likely across the southern part of the island. Torrential rains will cause a great deal of flooding and mountain mudslides island-wide. Storm surge will be moderate but high waves will continue to batter the southern coast. After Jamaica, Ivan will then set course for the Cayman Islands on Saturday. Hurricane warnings are of course in place for both Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. By the end of the weekend, Ivan is forecast to cross over western Cuba (a huuricane watch is in effect for the whole island) and then take aim on Florida, still as a major hurricane, Monday and Tuesday. The future path of Ivan is by no means set so keep it tuned to The Weather Channel for the latest.

everyone face south and blow as hard as you can... harness up as many butterflies as you can to flap thier wings southward, and turn your desk fan south too...

maybe we can all get together and blow this thing safely away...

No word yet from him, though I did try calling Saturday evening. No luck in getting through. Jamaica uses mostly cellular phones for communication since cell towers are easy to install, unlike land lines. Hopefully the towers are standing but if they don't have power, ect it could be a few days before phone calls are able to make it through.

It appears as though the eye of the storm failed to make landfall in Jamaica as it was originally tracked. However from the path it took it seems as though the eye passed only 20-30 miles south of our location down there on the southwest coast. With the winds being the most concentrated near the eye this may still mean some serious damage.

A soon as we have word, or pictures to share, I'll post them. First reports have 11 dead in Jamaica, which seems like a "low" number, but even still they just came out of the brunt of the storm overnight, so only time will tell.

We have some preliminary news reports from the island, though we have still been unable to reach Mule directly or hear from him first hand.

First, everyone is is OK and safe (the most important part!). Second, it appears as though our farm escaped significant damage to any structures. It appears as though our fruit and veggie row crops are all destroyed, but those can always be replanted.

Good news coming early, but we'll update everyone to let you know when we hear directly from Mule and have a first hand account of how everyone faired.

Thanks to all who sent their prayers, good wishes, and Irie vibes!

I am Glad to hear that all is well. Just the stress of waiting for the storm to hit is bad enough, I know, we have been under the gun in Florida for three storms in a row.
Best wishes to all

Just wanted to let everyone know that I finally heard from Mule overnight (phone message). Their phones are still crazy down there because the land lines are all messed up and with the power off it's really hard to recharge the cell phones.

He said they made it through the storm very well. Everyone is safe and the farm faired well. We only lost one outdoor shadehouse and took some minor damage to awnings covering some of the outdoor work areas. None of our buildings took any major damage (if any damage). All the row garden crops were flattened, banana trees and papaya trees laying all over the place. He said he has some really cool pictures to share with us when he gets the ability to upload.

Mule also wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers!
