What are these?
    #3112472 - 09/09/04 08:28 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hi shroomers
Anyone know what these are I've been trying to identify them for days. They look similar to a couple of psilocybe species but dont fit the bill exactly.
They were found in northern New York almost at the Quebec border. They were growing in mossy grass near a pine forest. The soil is sandy. Its been really wet here all summer. They are in a large colony, maybe a hundred or two. Sorry didn't put scale on the pics but the caps range from 0.5-2.5 cm. They do look a bit like liberty caps but the cap becomes almost flat when mature and the stem is a bit fatter. The membrane will peel easily off the cap like the regular edible mushroom. Oh the spoors are brown. What are they? Or what are they not. Do they look like any poisonous species?

Looks to be a species of Cortinarius. Definetly NOT a Psilocybe.

Probably poisonous...

I think that they are probibly not any psilocybe species that i know of. My first guess would be Inocybe. They may possibly be poisonous.

At first glance they suggest Inocybe to me, and Cortinarius is also a possibility. Do they have a distinctive odor (especially an unpleasant one)?

Neither genus is useful for eating (for any reason). Neither contains any edible species, and both contain species that have caused fatalities. Both genera are noted for being difficult to identify to species in.

Happy mushrooming!
