small shrooms and aborts?

ive just read through the archives and i still am a little confused. First of all im growing tai koh samuri on pf cake s with no casing. the cake started pinnin 3 days ago. my humidty is at 97% i use perlite and a ultra sonic fogger to mantain it . i use an aquarium air pump 8 times a day for an hour each. Now i understand that i should case for better performance and i plan that for my next try. the normal shrooms only grew to about 3 inches and were puney. then there veils broke and i went ahead and picked em. Now my aborts i have tons .. some an inch tall and an inch round and shit load of smaller ones. should i pick em and make room for bigger and better things or should i just leave em be.... i picked a few this mourn cause the tops were gettting read y to change... think they were gonna rot... so the rest of em should i let em rot or should i pick em and eat em and make way for the new..PS all of my "normal looking shrooms grew from the very bottom of the cake and the top and one side is fille d with what apears to be mostly aborts..not growing much weird looking fat and short... what do u guys think

I too have this same problem. All of my shrooms are small, 1-3 inches and their veils break. What am I doing wrong? I fan 3 times a day at least and there is a decent amount of humidity.

Hmmm, glad I found this post. Afoaf has just had very similair problems after experimenting with air exchanges - CO2 buildup seems to be the culprit here, but I am not certian. Only other difference is that the RH is a tad lower than usual (80-89%) probably due to decreased perlite use. The temps have been a little higher than normal (Summer, heh!) and I suspect that this is causing faster evaporation, combined with an experimental air exchanges, it is not keeping the humidity - I'm sure it has to do with CO2, humidity, and/or temp. - just a matter of finding the right balance in this case I think?? -=Entheonaut

lol! I don't think anybody cares about us!! Since your mature fruits grew from the verm layer, I would think that it was a little bit more moist and liked the conditions - you seem to have enough humidity though in your terrarium? Afoaf is have the opposite problem, many aborts forming on verm layer, better fruits on top/side. Perhaps your cakes are dry inside? I would pick all the aborts, wait for the flush to get over, clean cakes well, and maybe 'dunk' em and see what happens for the second flush? This is all speculation since I have no experience with tai koh samuri, the prob might be something else? -=Entheonaut

Ill try and offer what I can here guys. new945 - leave the aborts til the cap changes colour no matter the size if the cap changes colour get it out. you'll get to know it when you see it. I would recommend adding a manual fan once a day, and you possibly have a poor performing strain. Is this your first time growing this strain, have you tried other races? The mushrooms growing from the bottom is nothing but gravity, its ok. I would agree with entheonaut try dunking the cake after this flush and count on more (and better) flushes. shorty are you also using k.samui or another race? entheonaut is your foaf misting? I use perlite humidification and i still mist and fan 2x/day - 3x if i can.

thanx for all your help.. i think it was that i was filtering the air i was introducing was too minimal.. i started to introduce air without the filter and have a few fatties popping up. yes i am using another strain cambodian i have two pint size jars of those in the same chamber and there doing nothing yet... they wer e done about 3 days latter.... i let u know if not ill try the dunking technique... i have 24 jars of B+ that are almost done and i plan to case these. i hope i was just worried .

shizifty: no misting, this friend did not have to mist in the past either. Like new945, I suspect that CO2 buildup/inadequate air exchange. The only major difference this time for this friend is a change in air exchange, back to old school method I guess? -=Entheonaut

i decided that maybe moisture inside the cake was the prob so last night before bed i laid the cake directly on the perlite hoping it would grab a little water.. This mourning i wolk up and low and behold many of what had appeared to be aborts grew straight up about an inch. there now about 2.5 to 3 inches tall and there veils dont even seem like they wanna open yet.. i hope this is it.
