Would squirrel food work?
    #3111143 - 09/08/04 11:12 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all, was just wondering if squirrel food would work for the corn tek. I couldn't find any bags of popcorn, but there is a huge bag of squirrel food in the pet section and it contains corn, and sunflower seeds. Was just wondering if I strained all the sunflower seeds out if the corn would work or if it had to be "special corn". Thanx for any help you can give me.

I tried to find rye the other day, all I found was rye flour. So I bought it and will try to make some cakes with it. I did by some millet, it's parakeet food I think. But I also bought the big bag of squirrel food just in case it would work(it was only like 3 bucks for a 10 lb bag).

Nice, thanx for replying. I'll take a portion of each and try to mix it together and see what happens. Thanx again.

as long as you are using a pressure cooker you shouldnt have to worry about the SF seeds, I have only had problems with poor sterilization, in fact a friend has taken it upon himself to try a sunflower substrate to determine the risks of contamination

the only thing to look out for is any material that looks/has the consistency of dog or cat food, this could lead to a sludge problem, many comercial rodent feeds have these bits, whether its going to be harmful, ????. it may break down like dog food does and rinse away. Peanuts may also be a part of the mix, it's impossible to get the water ratio right with these buggers so thay would need to be discarded if the shells are still on them

other than that, its pretty much the same as wild bird seed mixes

Cool beans, thanx all. It's soaking right now. The only thing left in it is corn. I'll let you know how it goes.

I would remove the sunflower seeds. If you add some water the seeds will float up to the top and are easy to remove. The actual seeds probably aren't a problem, but the shells are not good.

I've never had a problem with them, they absorb water and they accept mycelium fine, the only issue is that you make sure that the grains are properly sterilized

Using WBS never worked that well for me, but the entire jar would often colonize except for the sunflower shells. The myc seemed to not like to grow on them.

Perhaps something was wrong with my method, but it seemed pretty clear to me that myc would not colonize the shells. I long ago gave up using WBS, so my observations may not represent reality. The shells in my WBS may also have been treated in some way.

my friend granola planned on doing some bags with nothing but sunflower seeds, he mentioned using cubes and azures... I hope they both grow well for him
