Cheney Warns Against Vote for Kerry

Sep 7, 3:57 PM (ET)

By AMY LORENTZEN

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday warned Americans about voting for Democratic Sen. John Kerry, saying that if the nation makes the wrong choice on Election Day it faces the threat of another terrorist attack.

The Kerry-Edwards campaign immediately rejected those comments as "scare tactics" that crossed the line.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States," Cheney told about 350 supporters at a town-hall meeting in this Iowa city.

If Kerry were elected, Cheney said the nation risks falling back into a "pre-9/11 mind-set" that terrorist attacks are criminal acts that require a reactive approach. Instead, he said Bush's offensive approach works to root out terrorists where they plan and train, and pressure countries that harbor terrorists.

Cheney pointed to Afghanistan as a success story in pursuing terrorists although the Sept. 11 mastermind, Osama bin Laden, remains at large. In Iraq, the vice president said, the United States has taken out a leader who used weapons of mass destruction against his own people and harbored other terrorists.

"Saddam Hussein today is in jail, which is exactly where he belongs," Cheney said.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards issued a statement, saying, "Dick Cheney's scare tactics crossed the line today, showing once again that he and George Bush will do anything and say anything to save their jobs. Protecting America from vicious terrorists is not a Democratic or Republican issue and Dick Cheney and George Bush should know that."

Edwards added that he and Kerry "will keep American safe, and we will not divide the American people to do it."

The candidates are campaigning hard for Iowa's seven electoral votes. Democrat Al Gore narrowly won the state in 2000. Bush has campaigned in the state five times in the last month, and Cheney has made three stops.

Hours before Cheney spoke, the Congressional Budget Office said this year's federal deficit will hit a record $422 billion. Cheney, in praising Bush's tax cuts, noted that the CBO said this year's projected deficit will be smaller than analysts had expected.

Scariest line in the article:

And of course, as usual, the Bush-bashing press shows its lack of understanding of basic economics. It's far from a record as a percentage of GDP, which is what counts. It's about the seventeenth highest on record as percentage of GDP. Not great, certainly, but far from a record.

Further, it's already been revised downwards twice since January, and may be again if government revenues continue to increase. Thank Bush's tax cut for the revenue increase.

Pinky, the GDP is not calculated how it used to be. If you exclude the government component of GDP, the figures are a couple of percentage points lower, another substantial portion is credit-fueled personal consumption, in other words, debt or the spending of fiat created currency. Another accounting gimmick, when companies purchase computers the government makes a statistical adjustment upward to reflect the government's view of how much computational power purchasers get for their money. The government also includes phantom employees of small businesses to account for hiring that they imagine is taking place but is unreported, the wages of these mythical employees are added to the GDP calculations. Non-wage components of personal income are also included (such as interest & dividends). Unsold inventories are also added to the calcs. There's a lot more smoke and mirrors nowadays.

The deficit figures do not take into account unfunded liabilities such as social security and medicare (which Bush increased spending on) as these are 'off budget' items.

It's not just the deficit, but the DEBT that matters. Most figures of the national debt also do not take into account unfunded liabilities (about $50 trillion for Social Security and Medicare).

Deficit spending is flat out wrong when the debt is monetized and is on the same moral level as counterfeiting. When more currency is created out of debt it lowers the value of all currency in circulation and is in fact a tax on everyone who holds the currency.

I'm guessing the magic uranium fairies would be the ones providing saddam the weapons... as well as breaking him out of jail and re-installing him into power.

Fortunately I have an easy choice this november since I'm pro-support-our-troops, pro-9/11 victims and anti-terrorist attacks.

don't forget about the magic nuclear-technology fairies since it appears saddam had abandoned that quite a while ago.

Close, but not quite. It would be the "magic uranium Kerry" who would provide the Iranian mullahs the low-enriched uranium they require to build their nukes. He and Edwards have both stated on several occasions that it would be a great idea for the US to provide LEU fuel to Iran.

Fortunately:

1) Either the Israelis or the US will bomb Iran's nuke plant before it gets to that stage

2) It looks less and less likely that Kerry will be in a position to make that error

Edwards added that he and Kerry "will keep American safe, and we will not divide the American people to do it."

Congress represents the people because we elect our representatives. Keep in mind that the majority of congress voted to go to war. Even Hilary Clinton and John Kerry, of course Kerry didnt vote for funding our troops while they are at war.

Keep in mind, the authorization of force is not the same thing as voting to go to war, that decision rests soley upon the shoulders of Bush, as commander in chief.

Ok, the authorization of force is saying "its ok to use force if you, as the commander in chief, deem it needed" it is not saying "you MUST use the force"
it is simply giving the President the authorization to drive the country into war.

While this is merely semantics, as I said, voting for the authorization of force is not the EXACT same thing as supporting the war.
