Psilocybe weilii : The offical "Fall 2004 Season"
    #3106364 - 09/07/04 11:10 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

We've had perhaps 10-15 threads about Psilocybe weilii in the last WEEK. This is getting to be a real excess and not everyone on the boards comes here to hear about this mushroom.

So here's a new temporary rule: If you have anything to say about P. weilii, post it here. Anything is acceptable(within reason): questions, comments, pictures... It's all fair game.

I'll start you guys off by giving you some info that I've typed up on weilii:
A post on how to tell the difference between weilii and their most common look alike: Psathyrella velutina

Thought I had more, but thats it for right now.

Let the posting begin...

Why wait? Go out now and go out later. =)

Me and my GF might be travelling down this weekend. We have a school break in Oct. but if I wait til then I may be SOL until next year. If we go now and come up dry, we can go back later. =)

That'll work, usually weilii take time to come up after a good rain though. After about 2 days of good rain theyll keep growing bigger until 4-5 days after.

Heres some tips for finding weilii:

The lawn variety of weilii are small, this applies to golf courses. They're hard to spot unless you come right up on them, trust me. Honestly, unless of course theyre in huge BULKING clusters which are pretty obvious. Theres no way I would be able to distinguish a weilii from a leaf if I were driving by in a car, and im very sure many novice hunters have went out looking for huge amanita like mushrooms poking out of lawns. The lawn variety stays pretty small, and unless you get out and walk very closely looking deep into the grass, you're likely not to find any.

I started looking closely at the bermuda when I noticed 1 abnormally big weilii a while back, I was astonished and got out of a friends car and walked over to it. Well to my amazement, upon closer inspection that one big very visable weilii was a father to COUNTLESS ample 3-4 inch weilii's BEAUTIFUL SPECIMENS who were FULLY mature at a MUCH smaller 3 inches as opposed to the 5-6 inch MAMMONTH inch big ass one.

Ever since then id always had great success with finding weilii. The weilii are hiders, they dont always like to come poking WAY EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE from lawns, but of course sometimes they do as ive seen. But the majority of them are not so noticable, it takes a close eye to spot them under that bermuda grass and you have to be walking pretty DAMN near it slowly to really have a good chance at spoting them, and when you do spot those fuckers, its not uncommon to find a cluster of 20. Now just step back further away and notice how well they hide, it's camoflague, weilii are hiders and when they do come up theyre usually looking surprisingly like leaves and laying low to the grass height, not going any further than the height of the grass USUALLY but there are of course big exceptions occasionally. I'm not sure what causes these huge weilii to suddenly grow way more than necessary and why other times they stay very low and hidden, going ONLY to the height of the grass at full maturity or more commonly it seems below the height of the grass, hidden...

So the moral of the story is you have to get close and personal with the bermuda, sometimes that bermuda might look shallow but in reality its much taller than you think and very capable of hiding many, many 4 inch weilii.

I don't claim to know it all, but I do know that weilii HIDE and most people will not see them when they hunt for them. This is probably whats kept weilii underwraps as far as awareness in the public, partly.

By the way, I've spotted 2 species that look almost identicle to weilii in all regards except the gills are a pale whitish. If I had never spotted weilii before and knew their smell, I would definitely think this was a weilii.

So be careful, weilii have some very close brothers and sisters. I've also spotted a new species that is also very weilii-esque except skinny and tall. It is also active.

Weilii do have white gills up untill maturity. If it bruses blue and smells like a weilii, it could be a weilii.

Actually would anyone be willing to go with me? I just know Ill learn so much more if I go with someone experienced. And you can keep the total find. I just want to go for the learning experience.

Good words my man Rancid! You have never let me wrong, and I'm gonna have to say to everyone that this guy seems to definitly know what he is talking about... I never found my first weilii until I observed the way he looks for the weilii. He walks VERY slow and takes his time, observing the grass closely, while brushing the bermuda grass with his feet. And even after hours of looking with no luck, he runs into patches upon patches of this magical fruit. All I have to say, is take this valuable advice, and you will have wonderous results.

I took his advise and found around 85 weilli today near my home today in Canton, GA!
Thats all folks,
Jon

The wet grass have been making heavy footprints in my patch when I walk through it.

How much is this gonna make it suffer?

do weilii continuously come back to a spot year after year? how many years until a spot no longer produces? do they come up in very near locations, or will they scatter from one end of a lawn tot he other, no longer ever producing from previous spots, a slash and burn biofeed technique?

there is deffinatly a booming energy here in Atlanta, and so much construction, they feed from the red soil, and genereal disruption of the natural habitat... I looked today, but found no weilii, but many mushrooms in full fruit... I don't think it is goona rain again but it will be cloudy the next few days, so lets hope the water we got will grow alot!

The info about 'not being able to spot them without walking and looking very closly'.... I would say that where I live the lawns are normally cut very low and often(this is how bermuda is supposed to be maintained.., even a 2" mushroom I could spot on most bermuda... fescue is imposible to search by car because most people keep it longer...

Oh shit, I just saw this picture of lizardkings.

I?ve been finding these but passing them off as an inactive, close species to weilii because of the white gills. I didn?t know they retain their white gills to such a big stage of growth. Damn, I?ve missed so many but I know where they all are, gonna go back and pick em

They?re about 5-6 inches tall, thats why I thought they were fully matured, and that they should have brown gills by then, but I guess I was wrong.

Weilii take on so many damn forms, it?s amazing.

By the way shroomerjon, see how much different weilii can look compared to those ones we found on the golf course?
