Bee on a leash
    #3108690 - 09/08/04 05:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Equipment required: Hemostats, dental floss, 1 jar, and  1 thumb tack. You catch a bee(preferably a large one)in a jar, then you put the jar in the freezer until the bee starts moving very slowly(I submerged mine in the ice tray), next you open the jar and clip the hemostats on the bee's leg(do this within 25 seconds), next you get the dental floss and tie a square knot where the bee's abdomen meets the bees thorax, finally pushpin the other end of the dental floss to the wall, pull the bee to where the string is almost fully extended and un clip the hemostat. The bee will fly around for a while and then go limp on the end of the string if you want it to fly around again just agitate it slightly with a long object(don't be cruel). Makes a great conversation piece ! Do not try and hold the dental floss or you'll get stung.

Does this hurt the bee?

Not unless you tie the string too tight.

People use to do this with praying mantis. They tie it to their bed post to catch insect.

what is a 'hemostats'? this bee deal sounds like fun once i understand this part. i bet they like it, like a treadmill or something - you let them go at the end, right?

i wanna hear more about the threaded up mantises near bedheads  can i?

Hemostats are roach clips, thet are actually used for cutting off blood flow etc. during operations.

I've done this a couple of times. But i've always just held the end of the string. I haven't been stung yet. At the end I always try to make sure they get free.  The only time the bee has died on me was my first attempt. I caught a bee in a pan and put a lid on it. Then I put a few ice cubes in it and then stuck the pan in the freezer. When I looked next the ice had melted a little and the bee had gotten stuck in it when it froze back over.  :frown: Poor bee.

I cant remember if the ones with the yellow spot on their head or the ones with the full black head can sting, but if u get a Carpenter bee and do this your all good about not getting stung if it is the right one. Look it up on google

If you just keep the bee, that is not only cruel, its stupid.

If you let it go after a while like whiterabbit, cool.

Besides bees are meant to fly around and hunt get pollen, so ya you trap this bee on a string ,and then show your friends, hey look I have a bee on a leash, you get bored, days later the bee is dead.

THE END

amazing

Starting your own beehive, now that would be something cool.

Would these hemostat clips not damage the bee's leg?

It's hard to imagine how you can pull this off without damaging the lil dude somehow.

Neat idea tho.
