Myc. question
    #3108562 - 09/08/04 04:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Supposedly breaking/mashing up the myc helps it grow faster, but to what degree do you "mash." My cat is using a mycobag and it seems like the Myc is in big clumps after he mashed it. Should these clumps be mashed even more into fine substrate like the soil mixture itself, or not? It just doesn't seem right b/c the myc is already broken into fairly large pieces and I dont think anything can grow off of "clump balls," and also it would seem like damaging the myc would be another factor, tho Ive heard it wouldnt...

When you are spawning something, you try to break it up into the smallest pieces to make sure you have many innoculation points.

So if you break it up very small, you are essentially hitting more substrate initially, but at the cost of the mycelium taking some time to repair.

The jury is out on whether to go as hard as possible though. It doesn't damage the mycelium permanently though.

Those clump balls will become another white mass again.

not as much as you'd think. grate the motherfucker as small as it will go.
as utopianglory says, it will take a while to recover, but when it does, it'll be all over the substrate like a cheap suit.

Look at it this way this is mycelium and can be broken down into microscopic sized pieces without any problem what so ever. This can be witnessed when we shake a jar and it seems as if the mycelium just disappears but within 24hrs. we can see it coming back to life ten fold or better. What you do not want to do is shake/mash it more than necessary which is two times, once at the time of innoculation and another time when it's 30-50% colonized. The only time you will want to shake/mash again is if you suspect contamination then growth will be slow to no go after it's shaken/mashed. Hope you fully understand now? If not then just mash the living hell out of it but do not mash the actual grains themselves. I'm sure ya knew that already right?

Ive pretty much concluded that there is alot of opionionated procedures here in the shroomery. I remember one post where a dude said to mash the myc. up WHEN: 1. Quarter sized 2. 25% 3. 80 % colonized and Ive heard all sorts of others... oh well just do the monster mash
