Another source of concentrated peroxide is the beauty salon.

Back when I used a lot of peroxide, my local grocery store often would have big bottles(1L) on sale for cheap. It's a major hassle to get all of the bottles off the shelf and then bag them all up, so I would just have a clerk get me a case of them or go find a box and put them all in it.

They were always more than happy to help me, but it always made them curious what I was using all that peroxide for. I would usually tell them that I use it for doing patinas. That usually made them feel stupid and shut up... Then I would offer the information that a "patina" is the process of aging metal to look old or more ornamental. Then they usually brightened up and said "Oh, that's cool."

I have no idea if H2O2 is actually used in making patinas, but store clerks aren't going to know that. And even if they did, it would be part of my "special process".

I've even spun them long-winded stories about how I sell civil war sword replicas and shit like that. They eat it up.

Anyway, I hope my cover story is usefull to others, although I'm sure that there are stories just as good. You could even just tell them that you grow medicinal/edible mushrooms!

or you could just tell them that you have a huge infection on your ass from when you fell on your ass while streaking and that you don't have any health insurance so you sit in a tub of peroxide every night.

this, imo, is the best... even better if it's the truth.

Back on the topic...
Mushrooms don't like acidic substrates. I think that's the reason why lime is added to most bulk substrates - to basify the substrate. Lower PH is known to cause fruiting problems. Also the enzymes that break the h2o2 are destroyed by heat(right?). So I think that with the vinegar is needles. Seems like no one tried it though.

> Mushrooms don't like acidic substrates.
Oysters grow on coffee grounds (PH 5) and newspaper (PH 6-6.5).
The soil the giant puffball grow here around has a PH of 5.
So how come you know that mushrooms do not like it acidic ?
I think that depend very much on the strain and on the species.

Yeah, It depends. But why do you think that lime is added to most bulk substrates?

I do not know what recipe you are referring to.
There are certainly some species that do not like acidity or some substrates
that are very acidic so that they need some lime.
But in Stamets GGMM the PH of the recommended substrate for Shitake should be
around 5.5-6 at the beginning and drops to 3.5-6.0 prior to fruiting.
Also the recommended sawdust recipe has no lime as a ingredients.
Only the bulk substrate recipe has a bit of lime as ingredients because the
bulk substrate itself tends to be quite acidic - but that does not necessarily
mean that the substrate itself is alkaline.
It might also be only less acidic then before.
Only casings should be a bit alkaline as far as I know ...
