Hey i was wondering about the weilii patch i have in my yard. i have picked the big ones and i'm still waiting for the babies to grow larger but, really thats beside the point. These suckers all popped up right after Ivan and i was wondering... if i water my lawn around where the weilii are will they just keep growing and growing? So in essence, hose the area down and in two or three days pick the fruit? Would this work? If so, how much water do these awsome lil mushies need?

Well, I would say they need a fair amount of water. Don't be too cautious though, these suckers can handle a lot of water which is apparent after the Ivan fruitings. I say water it down and pick your shrooms!

hell ya, if *I* had a patch in my yard I would water it... but don;t over do it... maybe in a couple days when we hit the dry spell water it then and then by the time it is ready to fruit again we will get rain... CLEAR FORECAST for the next week :frown:

Damnit I wish i had a camra!!! Last night I took my dog for a walk and really wasn't looking but when my dog was taking a shit I saw a brown thing in the lawn. So i walked up there and it was a kinda waxy cap, i turned it over and I saw brown (Some white) gills so I picked it and brought it home. By the time i got home the stem bruised such a blue I was amazed. I put it on a paper and today i looked at it, it was faint but defently a purple color(At this time the whole stem was pretty blue and the cap was starting to bloch with blue bruises) Amazing enought this is In upstate South Carolina.

After the next rain (Anyone know when it will be?)  I will def. devote the whole day to go looking for them and get pics.  I will have to go get one of the disposable digis  :frown:.  This was on a small patch of lawn and I couldnt find anymore around it but im am almost positive that it is a wellie.  Can anyone think of anyother mushroom that would bruise blue in a lawn?

Um... was this found in South Carolina? If so, the chances of it being a weilii are slim unless they are suddenly fruiting over there. Maybe a Bolete? Spongy gills? Well, this shouldn't be in this thread. So read the FAQ and post a new thread with a description.

Found about 10 today dried/semidried weilii today. I think most of my patches are done fruiting untill we get some more rain. Another thing that kinda screwed over the patches... the weekend. Everyone mowed their lawns =\

Wow did they ever! Everyone! I think that is whats keeping me from finding any new patches lately. Looks like Atlanta will get wet this Sunday and on through the begining of next week. Come on rain. *crosses fingers*

>Another thing that kinda screwed over the patches... the weekend. Everyone mowed their lawns =\
-And in the case of 2X and myself, mowed AND aerated. The mushrooms were chopped into tiny bits and presumed massive damage to the mycelium. I spent some time in the yard looking for dirt plugs with mycelia in it but to no avail.

>One thing that I noticed, they like yards that are at the bottom of hills...
-This is expert advice, not to be overlooked. 2X and I noticed the same thing. Though, I don't think the entire yard has to be down hill. Many of the spots we have found them are on or just below a small hill. The slopes are steep, about 35%. The slopes don't even have to be that big... we have found them on hills just 5 to 15 feet long, but the slopes on each was about 35%.

On the matter of karmic instinct. If you really buy into it, and it works for you... then thats great! Find them anyway you can... but, before you eat them you need to be sure. This means proper identification. Under no circumstances should you start eating these mushrooms without a proper ID. You may be convinced that the mushroom is a active, the mushroom may have told you it was fine to eat BUT YOU STILL NEED A PROPER ID. I was astonished to see 2Experimental, who should have known better, when he started munching caps before a print set in... on his first find of the species. I'll admit that he was right in his assumptions, but no one should assume anything in this potentially deadly hobby.

I know there are non-actives that bruise, but can anyone tell me if there is a poisonous mushroom that smells funny?

as always you go way overboard... there is no way it could not have been a weilii! if you had done some research and put down that book by stamets which you call the bible and acually look through pics of weilii here, you would have seen the clear features.. I know there is non actives that bruise, but not that apear liek those did, have a pellicle, smell funny, and also bruise ... common sense! I only printed to be 100% sure before I ate more then a taste test. and also there IS NO poisonous weilii lookalikes out this time of the year here in GA( that I know of, correct me anyone if I am wrong)
