Birthing early?
    #3106102 - 09/07/04 10:22 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

My jars are mostly colonized but I think I have to many. I have 6 pint jars. So i was thinking of birthing one or two of them a little early (they are 85% done but the last bit takes the longest). Can I do this? If so how do I birth them early? Do i just remove the excess uncolonized substrate? Also can I cut them in half so I have two half pints instead of 1 pint or does it not make a difference?

I would recommend letting them finish colonizing. If it is an absolute must, you can take out the cake and scrape away any and ALL uncolonized substrate with a plastic fork or something similar swabbed with rubbing alcohol.

Most teks even recommend that you leave the cakes in the jars for several days after the exterior is 100% colonized. This gives the mycelium adequate time to consume more of the nutrients and leads you closer to optimal fruiting/yields.

^^^^^^Agreed.

You really should just wait till 100% colonized and then birth or wiat a few extra days to make sure the inside is fully colonized too.
