"Berkshire Blue" Amanita

"Berkshire Blue" Amanita
This photograph was taken by the Late Professor McGinty, the only person ever to have found the infamous "Berkshire Blue" Amanita. While many mycologists believe that this is a fraudulent picture, others come to the Berkshires to walk the same woods frequented by the late, great Mcginty, with hopes of finding this elusive mushroom for themselves.

I found this intriguing bit of info at the Berkshire Mycological Society home page.  It's really quite amazing looking, although some think it fraudulent.  If it is, it's well done.  If not then we have quite the specimen.

Since this is the only known finding of the Berkshire blue, it may suggest a spot mutation, instead of an individuated species.  Perhaps an albino or leucistic pigmentation.  Perhaps another variation like formosa.  If it is its own species it suggests that it has perhaps the most obscure fruiting triggers known.

In either case it has gained quite the status of a local legend among amateur mycologists in the area, kind of like the monster of Loch Ness.  Hope you find this as intriguing as I did.  Any thoughts?

I agree that it's probably photoshopped.  However i was trying to bring up a topic through it.  Spot mutations are possible, and this could very well actually happen.  I guess it was kind of a thought experiment, i.e. What if you found it?  Would it be a mutation, or new species?  Would you take a spore print, or leave be because you could not bring yourself to destroy such a beautiful thing? etc.

I myself, despite feeling that the pic has a 99% probability of being altered, am choosing to believe in the idea of "Berkshire Blue", because mycology is strange and amazing, and i refuse to kill that spirit i still have.

This is our chance of having our own "One-eyed Otis, biggest bass in this here lake, only been seen once chewing done a raft of full size goats!  Smart evil little bastard he is, but one day i'll finally catch that enormous bugger and make him pay for what he done to po' ole' Milky!!"

I'll be telling this or a simillar tale to my kids one day while passing on the art of the foray, all the while keeping my own eyes open.  I want that story, that feeling of legend to remain, keep the hunt magickal, and that's where i'm coming from.
