"Berkshire Blue" Amanita

"Berkshire Blue" Amanita
This photograph was taken by the Late Professor McGinty, the only person ever to have found the infamous "Berkshire Blue" Amanita. While many mycologists believe that this is a fraudulent picture, others come to the Berkshires to walk the same woods frequented by the late, great Mcginty, with hopes of finding this elusive mushroom for themselves.

I found this intriguing bit of info at the Berkshire Mycological Society home page.  It's really quite amazing looking, although some think it fraudulent.  If it is, it's well done.  If not then we have quite the specimen.

Since this is the only known finding of the Berkshire blue, it may suggest a spot mutation, instead of an individuated species.  Perhaps an albino or leucistic pigmentation.  Perhaps another variation like formosa.  If it is its own species it suggests that it has perhaps the most obscure fruiting triggers known.

In either case it has gained quite the status of a local legend among amateur mycologists in the area, kind of like the monster of Loch Ness.  Hope you find this as intriguing as I did.  Any thoughts?

I have found a  a group of about 20 Blue Amanita Muscaria look a likeys in my garden , under my young Oak tree. I have crushed up and distributed the crumbs of many Red Amanitas over the last 5 years . Are these really Blue Amanitas. They have a ring , warts and bulb. Waiting on a response from my mycologist friend Dr Christian Taylor. I need to take a picture in daylight of the whole group in the ground , thanks. RH

I found this while looking up the species. To be honest the photo looks like it's shopped, over-saturated manipulated in someway to me.

Stropharia aeruginosa is sure a beautiful mushrooms :bliss:
