Diminished Sevenths
    #3104317 - 09/07/04 04:49 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Anybody know the theory behind this? I've looked but haven't been able to scrounge up anything conclusive. What are the intervals, 1 b3 b5 b7? What mode does it resemble? Ahh, so many questions!

There are 2 kinds of diminished 7ths. a half diminished, indicated by a circle with a line thru it, and a fully diminished, which is just a circle.
-The half diminished 7th chord has a diminished triad(minor 3rd, flat 5) with a minor 7th.
-The fully diminished 7th chord has a diminished triad with a diminished 7th (1 half step lower than a minor 7th).

In root position:

diminished 7th (or minor 7th for a half diminished chord)
flat 5th
minor 3rd
root

So, an A fully diminished 7th chord would be A,C,Eb,Gb.

A diminished chord traditionally acts as a leading chord to the tonic or dominant. So a B diminished 7th chord would be B,D,F,Ab, resolving to a C Major chord. Functionally, the Bo7 chord would be a vii diminished7.

Some interesting facts about diminished chords:
A diminished 7th chord equally divides the octave. (the only other chord to do this is an Aug6 chord). This means between every note is a minor third. This also means that every inversion can be a root position, since every interval is the same.
The first chord to be used in parallel motion (since that was taboo for hundreds of years), by Beethoven.

I hope this all makes sense to you... please lemme know if there's anything I can make more clear.
