Portions of WWW inaccessible
    #3104856 - 09/07/04 08:20 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

This started yesterday. All of sudden specific sites could no longer be accessed. These sites include slashdot.org, hotmail.com, and verizonwireless.net. They were accessible at the early part of yesterday but then, for no discernable reason my browser simply reports sending request to domain.com with a failing timeout. This is irrespective of browser and a ping shows that the hosts are indeed unreachable. At work today i confirmed that the sites are not down and fully accessible. So, it's a home connection only problem and isn't browser related. Any ideas?

verizonwireless.net is the only one not working for me. Yesterday shroomery.org dissapeared for a while, and I've also noticed other websites doing the same thing in the past couple days.

Not sure what it is. Routing problems? Terrorist fanatics? My cousin billy the hacker?

i considered the possibility that Frances was to blame as I am close enough. seems it shoulda been inaccessible from work tho. work is satellite while home is DSL but same provider. not sure if that makes a difference.

Dsl operate off of a harline conenct all the way thru....mebbe a large routing server that ran your DSL was knocked offline....

A sattilite provider would have a definite workaround for any drops that would come from regional disturbances.

Just a thought.

here's a tracert for slashdot.org

i'm not exactly sure how to interpret that as far as solving my problem. i killed every piece of firewall and was able to access slashdot once but couldn't repeat the trick.

holy fuck this is annoying.

i'm real close to ditching my ISP (earthlink)

i changed to an alternate dns and got a bit farther down the chain but it still fails once it hits the 66.35.xxx.xxx range.

i'm thinking this is so far out of my control i might as well quit.

Yeah....seems like something directing you to that server is screwed.....mebbe inundated with re-routed requests from some florida site that's down, or somesuch.

I'm not too net savvy as fara s actualy fixing the problem, but it would seem to me taht you'd have to force an alternate path thru more servers adn try it with another route.

Then  again, maybe it's just an earthlink fuckup in general....i know i used to trust them, but i always ran into this problem from time to time.

I had problems here were my ISP's DNS server wasn't resolving domain names right (i.e. it wasn't converting domain names into IP numbers and vice versa). It went away after a couple days. Tech support didn't seem to know anything about it,but then again they're idiots mostly. It may have been related to hurricane Francis.

Did you try going to those blocked sites with just the IP?

I do think it's related to the hurricane though...

yessir

also, if you read the traceroute log you'll see that it was hopping on it's merry way and failed when it hit slashdot's netblock.

nslookup resolves no problemo

My bad,I didn't really look at it.

That's a strange problem you got on your hands.

Do you think it may have something to do with the massive power outages in Florida? I haven't had any problems like this, nor has my cousin in Orlando though.

mnd, i would wager that your are infinitely wiser than i in practically all aspects of networking.

bearing this in mind, take no offense when i say:

no fucking shit

the question is, "what the fuck can i do about it?"

just to add to the enigma my linux machine can now traceroute successfully but still fails to ping or load the webpage. meanwhile, my windoze machine still cannot complete a tracert.

in answer to my own questioon i would suggest calling my ISP. i've been trying to think of the proper channels to go through as well as what information i should try to convey. needless to say, my experience with working with earthlink on this issue so far has been dismal.

also, note that the other sites that remain inaccesible exist outside santa clara and on different netblocks altogether.

I've had the same problem before. Went away in a few days. I'm pretty sure it was the ISPs fault.

you can send full traceroutes with source IP and destination IP to our ISP's NOC. As well as to the NOC of whoever hosts said unreachable sites. Thats about it.

and the solution is...

drumroll...

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5975

yep, mtu setting was not optimal.

once i found my optimal mtu all was well.

the pressing question being, "Why did the non-optimal setting work for >2yrs and suddenly stop?"
