Can blind people (blind from birth) have closed eye visuals?
    #3097982 - 09/06/04 04:09 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

This question dawned upon me earlier today.. do you think people who have had the misforture of being blind from birth can have CEVs? This is very interesting, because if they did it would mean that somehow the brain was pre-programed with visual concepts. For example if the experiencer saw a tree it would mean that somehow the concept of a tree was pre-programed into the brain at birth. heres the problem though.. the experiencer would have no way of communicating the shape of the objects or colours they see because the wouldnt even have concepts of colours or simple shapes such as lines, curves, circles etc etc.. I wonder if this has ever been researched because if somehow blind people were to see objects in the inner world that exist in the outer world without even been able to actually see them with their optical nerves this would mean HEAPS. Any thoughts?

Sounds like an druggie extension of the question of whether people born blind dream like we do  :stoned:

I guess we will never really know because a person born blind has no point of reference with which to describe a visual experience to us. I wouldn't be surprised if their mind could construct objects though but they would be really funky looking  :mushroom2:

Based on brain studies, other areas of the brain expand into the unused centers of peoples brains. Therefore I would say that the blind are much more likely to have auditory or tactile hallucinations.

Why not ask a blind person? They'll at least know if they are getting some sort of unusual stimulation that is not sound or tactile.

I'm pretty sure they (at least some) can see shapes and colours when they trip. I doubt they would see trees or things that actually exist though. They might be able to construct some kind of image based on feeling a tree previously, but it probably wouldn't look like an actual tree. I couldnt tell you b/c I'm not blind, but I know it works for colour blind people.

descartes always claimed that there were certain concepts that existed in the mind without the necessity of sensory input - concepts like dimension and perfection - he claimed that even without having ever seen a triangle, through a description of it using basic geometric concepts, the "image" of the triangle could have substance in the person's mind. thus - blind people who take LSD see the album cover to Dark Side of the Moon.

or something like that...

I just thought of this when reading this post... how many times have you tripped and seen completely novel things that you couldn't fathom before? For me, it's everytime, I never see faces or trees or anything, but more along the lines of...well lines, circles, complex shapes and colors very similar to some Aztec/Mayan type art. I'd think, if anything, they too would see these ancient looking hallucinations. Don't know though, are brains are pretty fucking weird sometimes.

i was always under the impression that the human mind is capable of producing perfect geometric shapes. so i dont see why blind people wouldnt be capable of seeing closed eye visuals to some extent even if they cant explain them.

Do you think you could explain shapes to a blind person by having them feel them out? Maybe it would work with textures as well?
