found this today in the wood of my local park. I've tried to ID it myself and am not having any luck. i dont think its active but im just a beginner.

Ok, cap is about 2 inches wide, brown in the middle then fading to tan on the edges. the edges also have little ridges. Gills are white and connect with the stem. Stem is off white and about 4 inches tall, and 1 centimeter wide. it also has a little "flap" at the bottom, seen in the picture. any help would be appreciated, as would any tips on when to search and for what in southern new york (long island). i've read the faqs but am just looking for more info. Thanks

Read the sticky thread at the top of the forum and give more description.

Your mushroom is an Amanita, and it is *not* a close relative of Amanita muscaria. Beyond that we need to know more.

Happy mushrooming!
