I've smoked cigarettes off and on for the last year or so, and so has my wife. She used to smoke when she was in her 20's, but quit after we met (15 years ago). She bought me some cigars last Christmas and that got us "started" on cigarettes.
It's a nasty habit. I don't drink alcohol, but sometimes she smokes when she drinks. We've been trying to quit, for good, but it is tough. I read the other day (Andrew Weil) that one needs to keep trying and eventually the resolve will overcome the addiction.
Obviously, it's very addictive. It's also a "bad example" for our kids. I don't mind hiding the occassional use of mj or shrooms, but cigarettes are hard to hide and offer a limited benefit. Yet, still, it is tempting.
By the way, we smoked Sherman's, which if you're going to rationalize the habit, are probably the best, being natural. But still, they contribute to so many health problems that it's not worth it.
Good luck to anyone else out there trying to quit.
Peace.

I struggled with trying to quit for 4 years.
Stopped smoking for the last 3 years, but got addicted to nicotine gum for a year or so.
I quit the gum earlier in the year, along with caffeine, alcohol & weed - all aided by enhanced body awareness during shrooming! The bald headed fellows have taught me more than anything that it's very important what you put into your body.
Not that I didn't have fantastic times smokin da weed! Nor begrudge anyone else's drug intake. As long as you know what you're doing consume what you want:)
I am fully convinced that the only way to quit smoking is absolute willpower.
Nicotine is a rotten drug. It had it's claws in me for so long, but now I'm free!
Anyone trying to quit - the only advice I can give is to view it as warfare!!

I smoke mainly to help me deal with my other addictions. I really love the act of lighting something on fire and smoking it, it makes me feel better. Plus it gives me something to do when I'm bored, which is a lot.

I'm a social smoker. I don't buy my own packs, but if someone offers one to me, I'll take it. I feel kinda bad mooching them off of other people, but it's probably what's kept me from getting addicted all these years.

I smoke almost a pack a day. Got introduce to them by friends, didn't smoke much for quite a while. My problems really started when I could buy them myself when I turned 18.
Bad addiction, but it offers me a release sometimes. Great when I drink and offers a little boost if I smoke some herb. It feels nice when I'm on shrooms, too.
Plus, I don't like the prospect of living in a nursing home. Hopefully I'll kick the bucket before then.

I feel sorry for smokers. It's a pathetic addiction fueled by capitalism.

Capitalism is about a free market, so banning any item on the market is contrary to capitalism.

Ya, fascism would be a good term for it. Hypocrisy would also work.

I enjoy having an addiction.
Sometimes I enjoy waiting to smoke more than the smoking itself.
Depriving myself makes me stronger.
All pleasure is just buildup and release. Since addiction fits this pattern, it could be considered a pleasurable thing in itself.

I was a smoker for 12 years, it was seriously hard to, I contemplated it for about 2 years. Finally I got the flu and bronchitis and since I was already mentally prepared for it, I finally did it! Today is my 3 month anniversary since I've quit. I'm done for sure. The best part about quitting smoking is how much cash $$$ I'm saving... Including stopping at Tim Horton's for coffee, or at 7-11 for a slurpee, gas and such, being a 1/2 pack a day smoker (in Canada they come in 25's) I'm saving approx. $400.00 per month! Giddy UP! P.S. ~ I truly LOVED smoking
