New pics of possible new species of Psilocybe
    #3103610 - 09/07/04 04:16 PM (13 years, 17 days ago)

The patch seems to be picking up now that fall is rolling around and the mushrooms are starting to get larger(although they're still tiny).

Here's some high-res pics of my latest finds:

And before you ask about progress on finding out if this is a new species... I've been an uber slacker and havent sent out any mushrooms or prints yet. Perhaps this weekend.

i have a couple of questions i hoped you could answer. what kind of of wood do you usually find these on decidous or conifer? did you find these today in the rain? how can you tell them apart from caerulipes? I live on 50 acres of wooded land i'm hoping to find some of these. thanks

It's hard to tell what kind of wood they grow on because they grow from this gigantic pile of tree/shrub clippings we have back in the woods. I am guessing they grow from decidous wood.

I know they're not P. caerulipes because of 3 things:
1. They're incredibly small. The largest cap I've found is perhaps 2cm
2. The gills are subdecurrent. Caerulipes are adnate,
3. These mushrooms always have a very pronounced umbo, even when full grown.

Just had a feeling I might find some actives growing from this pile of shrubb/tree clippings. I was looking for Ps. caerulipes in particular and then I saw these tiny things and thought "damn, that looks like a Psilocybe... but I've never seen anything like it before."

The stems are always dark brown so seeing the bluing is tough, but sure enough when I looked at them in direct sunlight, they blued... And the spore print came out purple brown. So my vote is that they are Psilocybes. If not, perhaps some species of Galerina(there is one active species of Galerina, although I'd never consume it).

great finds gumby,

i would guess they are most definately a specie of Psilocybe.

in the first two pictures (side views with gills and stems) they dont even really look like Psilocybe's to me,
but the third picture (showing the top of the caps) pretty much says Psilocybe.

They look a lot like Ps. caerulipes...(not to say that they are, but just that they resemble them..)

keep on shroomin,
gGG
