NJ Laughing Gyms? With pics
    #3103017 - 09/07/04 01:46 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I took a long "nature hike" today in the park. I found 2 clumps of mushrooms on decaying tree trunks...could they be gyms??

Habitat: Woods, on composting logs (of deciduous trees).

Cap: 4-7 cm..scaly, little raised bumps

Sporeprint: taking it now, will post later

this is the pic of them on the log

Nope, those aren't gyms, they don't have scaly caps...

my guess is some kind of pholiota, which is a genus closely related to gymnopilus so you're on the right track. p. squarrosa looks similar to what you have...

God, those photos are bad...sorry man.
They could be pholiotas of some persuasion, but could they also be Honey Mushrooms (genus armillaria)? I'm not sure, but to me, they look like they could be...

The cap surface is a good indicator to distinguish Gyms from Pholiotas. There are several terms used (and some not so used) to describe this indicator. Gyms cap and Pholiotas cap have a powdery surface but gyms can be described as a scurfy surface whereas Pholiotas have a more furfuraceous surface.

There are several different terms to describe a powdery surface:
- Farinose and pruinose: a very fine powder, like flour or confectioner's sugar.
- Furfuraceous: small flakes; dandruffy. Made of bran; like bran.
- Granulose: particles like grains of salt.
- Scurfy is an especially useful word that indicates a roughened surface, but you're not quite sure what to call the stuff that roughens it. In fact, you're not even being clear whether the roughenings are attached to the surface or not. Often, a scurfy surface has a top layer that is coming off in all sorts of flakes, threads and powder, and many of the particles are still partially attached to the surface while others are not.

This are some Spectabilis growing in the woods near my house.
Note the scurfy surface,

Enhancing the roughness,

Nice pics MAIA...those look awesome. The mushrooms i picked are very
"Furfuraceous". Theres little dark (spikes?) all over the cap and the bottom of the stem.

Yeah i need to learn how to use my camera and take good pics. koraks noticed the shittyness haha...
